No, but you are wrong by implying MSE is talking about pre-2005 complaints which aren't covered by the scheme nor by FOS.
Only periods post 2005 are covered by the Ombudsman unless your card protection was sold by one of the major banks.

With respect, I think that this is a rather sweeping statement and depends on one's definition of "major banks."

Smaller banks are covered pre 2005. A few smaller businesses are. In some instances agreements with other parties regarding responsibility have been made.

While the above post is not wrong per-se, I'd suggest people contact FOS directly to find out whether their pre-2005 complaint can be passed to FOS.

The original post in question was asking about card protection sold DIRECTLY by CPP prior to 2005.
No point contacting FOS if CPP have rejected the complaint as prior to 2005. That's the whole reason the CPP redress scheme does not cover anytime prior to 2005.

Definition of "Banks" is irrelevant, if they were subject to regulation prior to 2005 then FOS has jurisdiction. CPP itself was not regulated prior to 2005.

I am not implying MSE is talking about pre-2005. MSE is stating it at the bottom of the section "3 - Were you mis-sold before 2005?"
"We don't yet know banks' attitude to these complaints. But at the start of similar past reclaiming campaigns, such as PPI, banks rejected many cases the Ombudsman later upheld."

They are only referring to banks (major or not), just as you say. I'll agree with you on that one.

My whole reply was aimed at someone who was complaining to CPP-not a regulated Bank.
    Thanks for agreeing...:D

    Hello all

I was sold CPP when I took out a credit card with Natwest pre-2005. I'm not sure exactly when as it was such a long time ago. I cancelled it some years later when a friend told me it was superfluous - seeing as banks cover fraud. I remember the cancellation of policy telephone conversation to this day as i found it remarkable the aggression with which the sales person dealt with my request to cancel. It was almost threatening in tone, and had I been slightly less resolved I might have caved and renewed instead. Knowing it was just a script, however, I waved it off and congratulated myself on weathering the confrontation.

I have no record what period I took out the cover, but know I did as I am amongst those issued with the CPP compensation correspondence - inviting me to claim. I do wish to make a claim but know that most of my cover was pre-2005 - which the CPP people are not including in the compensation.

What can I do to ascertain exactly when I took out the cover - I have no records. Also, what is the best route by which to pursue this claim.

Thank you to anyone who can assist.

I can help with this one!

I have put in my post-2005 claim direct to CPP but for the pre-2005 payments I telephoned the number on the back of my NatWest credit card. They transferred me to their complaints department. I explained that I would like to reclaim my card protection payments and what did I have to do? They didn't take any details, just said they would look into it and contact me within so many days. A few days later I received a letter to say they were dealing with it and a few days after that a letter with a cheque attached! They repaid all premiums and interest.

So definitely give it a go. I never had to provide any details apart from my credit card number.

I forgot to say that my £624.79 CPP reclaim payment included "interest at 8% (simple) per annum from the date of each payment to the date of settlement" !

Hi there, I did not know if they had received my CPP form so I phoned the freephone number on the original letter and the told me that they had indeed received it and informed me on what date the information on my form was scanned into their system. They then said that I would hear from them within 8 weeks. Perhaps you should do this as it gave me peace of mind that the form hadn't been lost in the post! So, to answer your question, I don't think they acknowledge receipt of your claim form separately:)

Just to advise similarly dealt with today - i.e. telephone call to freephone number on phone obtained confirmation of date of receipt of claim and promise of reply within 8 weeks from that date. Very re-assuring. Now diaried to moan if deadline not met.

I wouldn't hold them to the exact date, if it's anything like PPI redress letters, it'll be sent in the eighth week and arrive in the ninth.
    It's not a strict deadline.

It appears that CPP helpline are giving out inconsistant advice as to when we will hear back with the outcome for compensation. I telephoned last weekend and was told my form was scanned on their system the 21th February and that I should hear back within the next couple of weeks. I asked if any claims had been processed yet and was told the first batch of cheques had been issued on the 24th March! I telephoned again today to check if it had been processed yet and was told that it will be exactly 8 weeks from when they receive the form before they will process it and so this means I probably will be waiting 9 weeks to receive anything back from them. Plus I asked if any claims had been processed yet and was told they had not started processing them. So if they are holding onto claims for 8 weeks before processing them it appears the first batch of cheques are being sent out around the week commencing the 14th April then. Out of interest because of this conflicting information has anyone actually heard back from them since posting the form?
