I've decided to do some treasure chest hampers for the kids, hobbycraft have them for £3 something at the moment, and i'm going to get some multipacks of sweets/chocolate/gold coins etc to use as treasure and maybe some party type pirate hats/patches and things.

It should work out to more sweets for less money than buying selection boxes I think, and be lots more fun for them :D

Maybe you could make a treasure map to give to your boys, to help them find their hidden treasure (the chests, hidden beforehand). Draw a map of your house, with a large X to show where the treasure is hidden. You might want to have a trail first, so if you are likely to give the maps whilst in the lounge, draw dotted lines to various places before one line leads to the X. Spill some cold tea or coffee onto a sheet of paper and dry carefully in an oven about gas mark 3. Burn a few bits off the edges with a match.

You could also add swords, maybe with 'jewels' to decorate them. Those flat toffee pennies from Quality Street could become treasure, and even though they are designed for girls, what about candy necklaces and bracelets?
  • Someone on Freecycle has advertised wicker baskets and wicker rings. I've sent a message, but no reply yet :(. I think they probably went very quickly. I saw the post about three hours after it was posted, and some things do go very fast.

Maybe I should post a wanted ad on Freecycle...... :D

Biscuit tin size I'd say (the sort you get at xmas like foxes assortd etc). Just roughly measured around 21 x 22 cms and around 7 cm deep.

I made this up for my daughter & her husband, it includes two cookbooks, tea towels, loads of kitchen gadgets/tools, jams, clotted crème (longlife), cook in sauces, Christmas pudding, biscuits, desserts, coffee etc..
I also made about 12 different flavoured sea salts for use in cooking, as rubs etc.

I think almost everything in the hamper was on offer, only a few things I paid full price for (and that was maybe the odd jam). The salts cost pence, I had small jars from previous spices, added herbs and spices from mine then made labels.

The Hamper was a bargain (about £2 from a charity shop), the shrink wrap from eBay, the ribbon was from an old hamper, and I picked up the hanging decorations ages ago in a sale (kinda over did it a bit as I had trouble getting everything in - there is not added filler the whole hamper is full of things stacked, restacked and juggled about to get it all in but I did it in the end :D).

  • I'm going to make a chocolate hamper for my sister. So far I've got or thought of

    face mask
    different hot choc sachets
    Scented candles
    chapstick
    few different chocs
    chocolate vodka or liquer
    chocolate cookies
    chocolate pasta.
Hotel Chocolat Salted Caramel and Pecan spread.

Where's a good place to get a reasonable priced basket? Thanks.

I thought of doing a choccy themed hamper too. How about adding cocoa butter body cream, body lotion and/or hand cream to your list? Thanks for your post, it's given me lots of ideas.

Thanks Rags, The Body Shop shea body lotion smells chocolately so I think I'll get one of those.

Thanks, which just says that you can make your own to suit individual recipients for a fraction of the price of a pre made hamper (and contains things they will use rather than some they won't) & still make them look good. Those shrink wrap bags are really good and you can either buy the basic bags in various sizes or the ones meant for open hampers like the way mine was sealed.
