  • I got some from Ebay :)
  • Rather than scan 26 pages, can anyone suggest a good source of cheapish hampers/baskets, or do people tend to use gift boxes? :)

A couple of relatives gave them this year and I thought 'I'd like to do that'!

Hat boxes from Dunelm Mill (in the sale), several lovely comments about the actual boxes as well as the contents.

Plastic crates from the pound shop, as money hampers for niece and nephew. Niece delighted with the bright pink colour, and is going to reuse it to keep her hairbrushes and stuff in. Nephew also pleased (but had blue crate ;)), and is going to keep his growing collection of puzzle cubes in it.

Laundry basket for my daughter, as her hamper was filled with various kitchen items - she prefers practical presents, and will be moving out next year.

Desktop filing cabinet, the type with narrow drawers, for my son. It was filled with pens, colouring books, sticker books, puzzle books, cards, writing paper, etc. The filing cabinet was from Freecycle.

I was going to make a gym hamper for my other son, but didn't, as he wanted cash towards his new RC helicopter. It would have been a gym bag though.

I made a mini hamper of stationery for my son's teacher, including decent whiteboard pens as well as fun items and practical stuff. It was all contained in a letter rack.

Other ideas that I have seen are large plant pots for a gardening hamper, children's bins for craft hampers, DVD boxes, and covered shoeboxes.

I also showed my daughter's fianc! how to make mini hampers for some of his friends. He used small boxes, including one that I had received with socks in for my birthday, and another that previously held a toiletry set.

It's definitely worth saving any decent boxes for next year. Smaller boxes can make hampers with free sample sachets, travel sized toiletries, or other small items. If you buy a box of greetings cards, the boxes are often quite good. If there is something printed on a box, you can cover it easily by making a label of the recipient's name - I added a cross stitch name to a plain jar filled with retro sweets, but if you don't sew, you can use sticky letters (like those used in card making), foam letters, calligraphy, or printed on a computer - just make sure that the paper is thick enough, so that you can't read the writing on the box through the paper.

If you do want to buy hamper baskets, Home Bargains, B&M, TKMaxx, Dunelm Mill, garden centres, all have them in stock towards Christmas.

Next year, I am thinking of making a cheese hamper for my sister. The hamper might be a cheese dome.....

I found whicker hampers to be thin on the ground this year. In 2012 I'd found beautiful lidded ones in a variety of sizes for a few pounds in B & M and Poundstretchers and looked from early oct on this year for them to be repeated - they weren't. :(

Eventually I bought some fabric ones in B & M for my neice and nephew and I bought a plastic lidded box with a whicker style weave on it from poundstretcher. I also got a flatter curver plastic box from Morrisons.

For 2014, I have already grabbed 2 plastic boxes that say popcorn on them and have a stripey design. They were in poundworld.

It really is a case of picking stuff up when you see it.

I picked up 3 of these lovely hampers from Sainsburys for £7.50 today down from £25. The baskets are lush!

"One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."

£7.50 each you mean? That's what they were reduced to in my Sainsbury's. I didn't want the contents though and the baskets though lovely I thought £7.50 too expensive to add to the price.
