Then use the greater bargaining power that comes from being part of a collective to enter into a constructive dialogue and negotiate with the employer?
I don't see many people on here supporting that argument though. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

The OP expects his employers to keep him in the manner to which he is accustomed without giving anything extra in return. There is no duty for employers to give cost of living increases. They probably wouldn't be competitive to tender if they did. We’ve had to remove your signature. Don't you have to have so many people in the union to do that? IF there is a union already why aren't they doing this for the staff now?
I don't see many people on here supporting that argument though.
For statutory recognition, yes. Many employers will however recognise a union voluntarily because they understand it is good practice and encourages good employee relations.
I assume there isn't currently a union recognised, OP hasn't said there is.
There aren't many people here supporting that line of argument because 1) it is not a solution that will necessarily bear fruit immediately and 2) a lot of posters here have fallen for the politicians and business leaders argument that it's just not possible to pay decent wages any more (even when profitability and bonuses are high and rising).0 -

Why should he have to run faster to stand still?0 -

It is possible to earn a decent salary as there are MANY people on here & my friends who do so and I did when I had a job before redundancy.
I have a friend who in the last year just by changing jobs and getting a promotion to the next level got himself a £6k pay rise. This is because the new company he works for are in a different industry and obviously have a better profit line.
Its the job you do, who you work for etc nothing to do with how much they pay their MD's and what bonuses they get (if any)
I have no fallen for any MP at all and am not deluded like I feel the OP is.
The OP is a driver and make no money for the company they work for, sorry to say.
They don't deal with £millions a day or make decisions on things that effect the profit and loss. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Yes I am aware that not all jobs/companies pay the same wage to everyone!
If OPs work is of no value to the company why is he employed?
Just because someone doesn't deal with millions of pounds or make big decisions doesn't mean their work is worthless!
Nobody is arguing that OP should be paid as much as the boss, simply that as a human being he deserves to be paid a decent living wage that allows him to maintain a reasonable standard of living and provide for his dependents.0 -

If the OP really don't think its a living wage then they shouldn't have taken the job but oh its zero hours so they don't really a job. Isn't that why good old Labour bought in the NMW?We’ve had to remove your signature. Anyone can drive a car hence a replacement should be easy to get.

So there are a lot of people who could do a job and that makes it ok to pay poverty wages?
If the choice is between nothing and something only slightly less inadequate it's not really a choice is it?
Do you really think it is right and proper for working people in a developed country to be condemned to a life of hardship in that way?0 -

If it hasn't risen for 6 years then it's obviously still above NMW. The OP may well be getting tax credits/housing benefit on top.
He hasn't mentioned any dependents.
He's in a job where he spends quite a bit of time sitting in a car waiting for a doctor while doing nothing. You think that should earn more than sitting at a checkout or pushing a hospital trolley? What should be the going rate for sitting around, exactly?
He's lucky he's in a job that can't be outsourced to a part of the world where somebody will do it for a fiver a day.
If he wants to earn more, he needs to get some skills that are in greater demand. The employer owes him nothing (legally or morally).
To put it into perspective, qualified nurses earn less than £10 an hour.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0
