how to get a pay rise

Here we go again with the same arguments....
"OP you're lucky your employer pays you anything at all so just put up and shut up"
and
"Just get another job if you don't like it".
Why?
Why shouldn't OP (and all workers) be able to earn a decent living wage that doesn't decrease year after year? Isn't that the kind of society we would all like to be part of?
He's not asking for anything outrageous and you can bet the senior management and shareholders aren't seeing declines in their bonuses and dividends.
He works for a company that gets its income from the NHS. THE NHS has had huge budget cuts over the past 2-3 years. If they can't splash cash on contracts, OP's company can't increase salaries.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

It depends on your definition of "can't afford". If they can't afford a pay rise because they want to maintain or increase dividends or management bonuses then I would argue that they can in fact afford a pay increase.
A lot of posters here fall for the argument put forward time and time again that pay rises are unaffordable and yet the share of national income paid in wages is falling and has been for some time.
Much of the profit generated by British workers now goes overseas. At the same time our public services are milked by foreign private and state owned companies. The railways are a good example - government subsidy to the railways has increased massively since privatisation but we don't benefit to the full extent because of the profit being taken out.
I think we need to step back and take a look at where we are at and where we are likely to end up if we carry on like this. It's not the kind of society I want to leave for future generations and it's certainly not what our parents and grandparents envisaged when they were struggling for workers rights, decent pay and a fairer society.0 -

How many times..... They are NOT the only options available to OP.
Take action against them OP and see how long you like the job for.
Join a union as Southend1 wants you to, then what?
Or get another job like everyone I know does when they don't get a pay rise. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Then use the greater bargaining power that comes from being part of a collective to enter into a constructive dialogue and negotiate with the employer?
But the workers already have few rights. They're on zero hours contracts. If they don't want the work at the rate offered then there will be others that do.
The OP expects his employers to keep him in the manner to which he is accustomed without giving anything extra in return. There is no duty for employers to give cost of living increases. They probably wouldn't be competitive to tender if they did.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0
