How about taking his wallet off him and giving him £20 to spend for the night.

The brother will probably end up buying him loads of drinks anyway, but at least you'll save some cash.

Oh..and if you do it every time, the brother may even, eventually, get tired of paying..

Am I an alcoholic? I've had a fair few brutal hangovers, I've had a few memory gaps till people reminded me, I've been sick once or twice through too much drink, I like a drink, its fun, I've fallen asleep downstairs before, I've done a few silly things apres drink. So am I an alcoholic?

Probably a raging one according to the moralistic, holier than thou tone that a lot of you are taking on this.

  • At the end of the day people die getting into the state your OH does. I really wouldn't be able to tolerate it. He is an adult and responsible for himself. My Dad was an alcoholic (probably still is but I've not spoken to him in over four years), and you cannot reason with them unless they see reason to change.

This would be ultimatum time for me. Sort it out or get out/I get out. He either values you more than he does getting into that sort of state or he doesn't. If he can't handle any drink because one leads to another leads to another then he should refrain completely. It really is as simple as that. You or getting paralytic.

It makes me very cross when people waste the time of the likes of police/NHS. Its ridiculous. There are people out there who can only get through the day because they drink half a bottle of vodka and help needs to be available for people like that instead of recreational drinkers who don't know when to stop. From your description it doesn't sound as though your OH relies on booze, just can't control it. Solution? Abstain.

Do you get that way every time you go out?

Or are you sometimes able to control the amount you drink?

There are many recreational drinkers who take things too far and that isn't alcoholism. But we can only go on what is written here. Whichever the OP's OH is he needs to sort it the hell out if its causing this much upset, else find a new partner who doesn't care about whether or not he chokes on his own vomit and dies.

OMG he sounds like my ex hubs:) He once got tickets to a really expensive gig, got wasted on the train on the way down there, and wasn't allowed in the gig then wandered into a really rough
area of the City 30 miles away from home, and was brought back in a black cab which cost a mint at 4am !!:mad:
To be honest, I think his bro will make sure he gets wasted, to wind you up.Hope it works out better than anticipated x:D

Yes, this has also crossed my mind to be honest. His brother always seems to have some sort of agenda. Thank you for the advice everyone. I'd like to think money might play on his mind a bit as the car had a rather expensive mot/service last week and I know he's been stressing out over it, so perhaps this might rein him in a bit.

If you ended up like that all the time, then you would be. But that doesn't mean you would recognise you were.

I don't think it's being either moralistic or holier than thou to suggest someone is an alcoholic - alcoholism is an illness. However, it's an illness which is very difficult for other people to live with, as Aileth is demonstrating by her dread of Friday.

You are if you go out determined not to get in that state, and then do anyway, and then cry the next day.

I get really really drunk on occasion, but only on purpose, and I do take care of myself, and surround myself with people responsible for my wellbeing.
