I am a Spiritualist and right now I would say - be very careful! There ARE a lot of con artists out there.
I would also say that it is mainly YOUR own belief here. if you believed in the afterlife you would be secure in your knowledge that he is safe and happy. you wouldn't be asking if you should see mediums. you are really seeking confirmation of this.
why not just go along to Spiritualist church meetings and judge for yourself? its usually free (they may ask for contributions just like a 'normal' church - or if they have a 'guest' medium might ask for a fixed amount to cover their expenses, its not much, just couple of £!)

a meeting normally starts with a song/hymn and then the committee leader introduces the medium. he/she does their bit and there is sometimes a break - sometimes not. it usually takes about hour to two hours. then there is a collection and sometimes another song. some Spiritualist churches like to include a prayer and then there is usually a healing session.
you don't have to stay for that - most people prefer to just leave or stay for tea and cake (I don't know if ALL churches offer that - the ones I have been to do as it is a good fundraiser).
The atmosphere is usually very relaxed - you wont be pressured into anything!

I'm obviously very naive on this sort of thing, but what actually is a spiritualist v medium - sorry, I really don't know.?

firstly let me say so sorry for your loss, when my life went a bit way wood my friend suggested i attend her spiritualist church, i found it very comforting and was able to have spiritual healing which i found very relaxing and on a couple of occasions the 'guest' speaker came to me with a message that were accurate. Overall i found the experience great comfort and very relaxing. There was no charge for church except the donation plate. Maybe this could be a way to familirise yourself with the spiritual community in your area. Please don't call someone from the paper etc.

Wish I had the gut's to do so, but I don't think it will give me the answers I'm looking for - I just don't know... Perhaps naively, I just want to know? x

I'm sorry, I really am so sorry, but the people we've lost don't communicate with us after they've gone.

None of us knows what happens after we die, but mediums just use your grief and your completely understandable desire to feel a connection with your son again, they use it to line their pockets. How terrible is that? Its reprehensible that anyone would do that to you, but they would.

Cruse can't give you any 'spiritual' answers, nobody can, but they can help you cope with your feelings and give you someone to talk it all through with. Even Samaritans could be a big help, you don't have to be suicidal to call them.
  • When both my parents died I placed a red rose in the coffin with them. I have never had a medium pick up on that and yet I was told they should do, I don't know but what I do know is that I don't believe in it anymore.

Seriously, I would save your money as they charge a fortune and you may be very disappointed and your purse/walled a lot lighter.

I am sorry about your son, they cannot be anything worse that losing a child. :grouphug:
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

Person-one - you may not have 'communicated' with anyone. others have. Don't lump all mediums under the term 'con artists'. People have different beliefs to you and believing in the afterlife via Spiritualism is a legal religion. in fact its a facet of most religions! they just have different interpretations.

    I haven't used a medium, and I can't even imagine using one.

The messages that are received all seem so banal - it's always things like 'I'm ok, I've met up with great uncle Bert, and you can find auntie Doris's false teeth down the sofa.'

Why do the 'departed' never tell us what it's really like on the other side, and answer really interesting things, like do you meet up with all your ancestors, or just the ones you knew in life.

That's the sort of message I'd expect be expecting to get.

But that never seems to happen, so I'd rather not take part in something that wasn't genuine.

I'm not interested in going over the old argument yet again, when there's a shred of evidence I'll re-evaluate my position.

I just don't want to see a vulnerable, grieving woman parted from her money only to be lied to and provided with a 'performance'.

If she wants to explore a religion, that's a bit different and up to her and I wish her well if it brings comfort. However, any of them that claim to directly communicate with the dead are dealing in deception, usually for monetary gain, and she deserves better treatment than that, ideally from people trained to help her, such as Cruse or the Samaritans or her GP.
