Overslept for work, rushing around had the tablets ready for Zara, turned round and Macius (my smallest cat) has eaten an Onsior tablet meant for a 40kg dog.

Called the vets, was told to bring him straight over. He ate the tablet at 8:35am, got to the vets 09:05 am. Turned out they did not have what they needed to make him vomit and they are not open at night so would have noone to supervise him overnight after a stomach pump so sent us to another branch (40 min away).

Got to the other branch - nearly 10:30 by that time. They said the bill would be around £800 and asked me for a £400 deposit. I had no money with me/on the account so I say that Macius is insured with PetPlan for 7k per year and asked if they can do direct claim.

Off they go to ask the Practise Manager (cat in the basket, no treatment so far), come back to tell me they neet pre-authorisation from PetPlan and without that they can only do "emergency essential treatment" (whetever that means).

On the phone to PetPlan for nearly 30 min being transfered and transfered and transfered. Finally get through and told they do not do pre-authorisation for under 1k.

Jesusssssssssss - cat still in the basket, I am fuming, finally they agree to provide the treatment, asked me to pay excess and admin fee (96 in total).

Fine, no problem with that - look in my purse, no bank card. Left at home as was rushing out to get the cat to the vets.

Said will call and make phone payment when I get home (40 min drive in straight line).

Accident on M25, took me 3 hours to get home.

Called, paid excess, asked about Macius - they pumped his stomach at around 1:15 pm (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), he is stable and they will call me when there is more news.

hate myself for having that tablet on the counter, hate myself for not taking him straight to Goddards Hospital (10 min awa) but the vets told me to bring him in as it was so early to make him vomit and THEN the whole chaos started.

I just hope little matchstick legs Macius my little horror pulls through, so worried about kidney damage as it took so long to get his stomach pumped that Onsior must have got into his blood.

Please keep your fingers crossed for him while I wait for the news.

    Thanks,

    Just found this:
4.10 Overdose (symptoms, emergency procedures, antidotes), if necessary In healthy young cats aged 7-8 months, oral robenacoxib administered at high overdoses (4, 12, or 20 mg/kg/day for 6 weeks) did not produce any signs of toxicity, including no evidence of any gastrointestinal, kidney or liver toxicity and no effect on bleeding time. As with any NSAID, overdose may cause gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver toxicity in sensitive or compromised cats. There is no specific antidote. Symptomatic, supportive therapy is recommended and should consist of administration of gastrointestinal protective agents and infusion of isotonic saline.

Just had a call from the vets, they flushed his stomach and are keeping him on some liquids - he needs to stay minimum 48hours then they will test his blood to see how he is.

    Poor little spider :(

Oh gosh, you must have been frantic!

What a balls up from the vets! Surely in an emergency like that they can treat them straight away?

    Hope he will be ok.

  • Poor mite BUT I would be absolutely DISGUSTED at the way you / he was treated by the vet

1st how on earth can a vets not have something to make animals vomit (I would think it's something they need to do pretty often!)

2nd sending you to a different practice is bad enough ... but not ringing ahead and making sure treatment was arranged for as soon as you arrived .... and then all the carry on re payment - !!!!!! immediate emergency treatment (ie making him vomit) should have been done .....

    Hope you're going to complain!

    Hope he's OK GR (((HUGS)))

GR....am thinking of you and Mr Spider legs.

    Who are 'Your vets' ????
I really would be furious to be treated in the way you were in such an emergency situation.....I think I would have been pumping his stomach myself all over their blimmin' waiting room.
