So cute, do you know what attracted it?

We actually have about 8 now, I have a niger seed feeder that I put up to try to attract Goldfinches that I often see near to the house.

No success with the Goldfinches, but I am extremely pleased with the Redpolls.

My neighbour claims they come every year, but its a first for me!

Yesterday I found that some of the 30 odd sparrows looked a bit different, lol. The are actually Dunnocks. shame I didn't notice for the birdwatch...

  • Wow those Redpolls are lovely!

Nothing so exciting for me - spotted a second Great Tit and a pair of Robins this week.

But the squirrels! I had three at once last weekend - and I only have a tiny garden. Has anyone tried the trick of rolling nuts and seeds in chilli powder? I'm tempted but a) it seems a bit cruel and b) I'm scared it will get in the birdies eyes...

Any other suggestions would be appreciated :)

Redpolls are so pretty! Only seen them in the West Highlands where there are lots.

(Had to use the RSPB bird identifier!)
  • Previous winters we have had a small flock of goldfinch on our niger feeder. Not one this winter until yesterday when we spotted three! It made my day to see them back again. Maybe they will bring more back with them today.

Never been lucky enough to see a Redpoll in these parts.

Had the starlings tweeting away from the rooftops. I get lots of chatter from the bird feeder area. Blackbird is chirping away too though not too much.

Little robin has returned to the garden, such a cheery wee bird.

I've given up melting lard and filling up half a coconut, such a faff, messy and very smelly. I bought some lard and just chopped it up and scattered around the garden. Drew in a lot of birds and it was gone in a very short time -not sure if it's a great idea.

Saw the fattest ever goldfinch today, it looks like a plump Victorian gentleman. It's very fat!

Same here Gers, gave up on melting lard. Some of the pound shops sell fat balls cheap. (50 for about a fiver). And the plastic container is handy.

If you are near a branch of The Original Factory Shop they have a good offer on at the minute. 2 packs of 6 fat balls for £1. I got 10 packs making it 60 for £5. Already have a plastic fall ball bucket so just filled that. I too gave up messing about making them a while back.
