Bird seed is dropping in price :T
I just got a 15kg bag of Country Wide 'No-Gro' mixture from my local supplier for £18 which is £3 less than it was in October0 -
Can I pick your brains pleaee lovely bird feeding people? :A
I bought two identical feeders at the weekend, and have filled them with nuts from the same bag. I have put them up in two separate places - one in my garden and one at my allotment.
I bought cage type ones because the big birds- pigeons, collared doves, magpies, wood pigeons etc were getting all the food and the little birds weren't getting a look in.
The one at my allotment is showing plenty of signs of little bird use, but the one in my garden isn't. I have seen one little bird flying away from it, and that's it.
Am I doing something wrong? I usually get lots of robins amd tits and finches in my garden, on the fence, washing line and what not and when they can, they are quite happy to feed but for some reason, they don't like this arrangement and I can't work out whyI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. Queen of Cheap, I bought a fat ball feeder which was ignored. Then I saw a robin trying and failing to get a grip on it so I stuck a twig through and now it's much more popular. The daft bluetits are still trying to eat seeds through the transparent plastic of another one though, not found a solution to that!0

Strangely enough I never had any success with peanuts in my bird feeders.
In fact they used to go mouldy in the end........
I now feed sunflower hearts & pelleted suet.
I have loads of feeders & I am using about 3 kilos a week at the moment !!0 -
You could try breaking the peanuts up a bit before putting them in the wire cage.
I am having to do that with the last bag that I bought as none of the birds were touching them, now they disappear as quickly as I can fill0 -
I wonder if the peanuts without the shells on go mouldy as quickly as normal ones.
My neighbour has a feeder with peanuts in and it doesn't look very nice now.
I ditched putting peanuts in when I saw some mould.
My feeders have a mix in - 1 cup mealworms, 1 cup white suet pellets, 1 cup red suet pellets and 1 cup of bird seed.
It seems to work for the birds that come here
My local B&Ms have extended their pet range and got large bags of bird food in now. I didn't check the price though.0 -
We've just moved house so currently trying out a new bird feeder station. Not seen any visitors just yet, but I'm hopeful!Every act of kindness, no matter how small, isn’t wasted ❤️

Think that birds have to get used to a feeder, though I could be talking a load of tosh! I have two peanut feeders which certainly attract fewer birds but are consistently visited and used. I have to fill them once for every three times of the sunflower hearts feeders. The sunflower seeds is also slower than the hearts but I think it's because the birds prefer the hearts.
Today I saw my first siskins since autumn, I don't think they migrate but they've been somewhere, lovely to see them back.
I stopped using the cages round the feeders as it let the larger birds (starlings and rooks) to reach the food. They couldn't get anything out of the ordinary ones as their beaks are too big to reach when clinging on but the cages were perfect for them! And as I don't mind the red squirrels having a feed I've left them off.0 -

Interesting, I've got 3 this year for the first time ever. I put it down to my new niger seed feed but wonder if they are just on the increase. I also have 4 gold finches this year, on this and the sunflower feeder and they are new visitor too.The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
