I'm tempted by them (but also tempted by others too).

I've just had engineered wood floors put in my kitchen, they were marked "suitable for kitchens" and there was a special sealant put between the slats. So far they are fine but I admit to being nervous about getting water on them.

I like that my kitchen area is small but would like it to be a little bigger for a few more cupboards and less of an awkward shape so I can get a table in. Ill spend a long time planing the layout of my next kitchen so I don't moan about it later.

Hate - the size - tiny galley kitchen originally. We had to have a wall knocked down so there was room for more than 1 person at a time in there. Also no room for a dishwasher. Right hand draining board - no space for it on the left.

Love - my double oven, the deep pan drawers, that the fitter got me to stand by the base units and adjusted the height of them to suit me (5ft 8). No more backache!

That's interesting. It's never occurred to me that there might be a right side and a wrong side for a draining board.

I'd change the sink and have one of those big deep stone sinks rather than the bog standard steel one that we have.

If you mean a butlers sink think and plan very carefully, if you don't get it at the right height (which probably won't be the height you want your worktops, you could end up with painful back ache from bending over it.

I'd swap the worktops and have wooden ones instead.

Lovely as my wooden worktops are they take a lot of looking after, I am so careful with spills of water etc but mine are still starting to go black around the sink after 6 years. If I chose again I might have them in one section of my worktop but not all over.

In answer to OP I love my glossy gray slate tiles and hate my kitchen doors, they are cream shaker style but hard to keep clean and stain easily (Mine have drips from oiling those dratted worktops!)

  • I've had my kitchen over 20 years so a bit dated now. I neither love nor hate it but there are things I would change or keep if I had a new one.

I probably wouldn't have wood again. Makes the room look too dark but I'd be wary of high gloss because, although I love the look, I think I'd be constantly cleaning it.

I don't like my corner base cupboards. You have to open the two doors to get anything out

I would definitely have a double oven. My single one is far too small

I have a table and chairs but think I'd prefer a breakfast bar and knock through into dining room to make a kitchen diner.

I love the fact I can walk straight onto decking to eat out when the weather allows

I would love a utility room.

A dishwasher is a must. 2 would be perfect. You'd hardly ever have to put any pots away :)

I like the fact I have lots of work top space and cupboards but you can never have enough cupboards

I live in a bungalow and have no understairs storage for ironing board or vac. Would love a built in cupboard to store those
  • Love -
its quite a big space with loads of cupboards and work space
Room for washer & dryer so no lugging out to garage etc
Folding doors to living room so not totally closed in but can try and stop cooking smells getting in there
Nice light neutral colour scheme make it easy for accessories to fit in

    Hate-
There's two weird end triangular cupboard things that hardly anything fits into

One of the light fittings doesn't work so having to constantly use extractor light

It has plenty of sockets but on is in a really annoying place, I want to build a large spice rack on one wall but the socket would be right in the middle
  • Love my island with bar stools one side and deep deep pan drawers on the other. Love my mixer/ shower tap I got from eBay (even the plumber was impressed) for £50 (£300 in b and q). Love my recycling bins which fit neatly under the sink so I don't have to have a stand alone bin and somewhere to put it. Love my ceramic hob which cleans like a dream as it has no bits to catch grease in every nook and cranny.

Don't like where my main light switch is I have to walk into the kitchen in the dark as its not by the main door.

Hate the fact there's no door so it opens straight into the living room so its a pain trying to watch tv with the washing machine on. Hate the fact that if there's more than two people in it, you are both tripping up constantly over each other. I love my fridge, as it somehow keeps some foods totally fresh for a week past expiration!

    Love...

Its a big room, but we opted for a galley kitchen at one end, alone one wall and an island. (That sounds grand, its all actually free standing bits and bobs and very not grand) We are 'serious' cooks, and find a compactish work zone actually better than a too big one round the edges. It also divides the room, so the cooking area of the kitchen is the cook's area...not for people who might be in the large living area in the same room (converted barn).

Lots of my loves are things other people would really disagree with...I love no longer having a 'proper' range, (although miss 'proper' toast that's all I think they do better than anything else). I love my clutter free work surfaces.

I love my continued paring back on gadgets....wish the whole household would agree on what's needed, I'm desperate to chuck out the toaster.

I adore my dishwasher, shelf instead of basket for cutlery makes life MUCH better, and its very, very quiet. Worth the extra money.

Love the fridge with water dispenser and filter, deposited not wanting one and seeing it as dh's toy. The water is delicious (I am a water snob) and really worthwhile for us.
