I love my sparkly granite worktops, I love my American fridge freezer, I love my cream and black colour scheme. I love my plinth lighting but I wish I had put a door on separating the kitchen from the Conservatory because in winter it is freezing.

I hate my tiny wee 10' x 8' kitchen, with its 3 doors leading off, and where it's crowded if more than 2 people are in it at one time.
I love my eye level gas grill and my 23 year old presure cooke. The best wedding present ever :-)

Newish kitchen - installed by the last owners.

    1. Hate the height of the worktops. At 930mm high they are too high for normal-sized females and too high for children and younger people, and too high for my elderly relatives who come to stay. I would like to lower the worktops to 870mm.

    2. Hate the wooden worktops. These might have looked good for the first six months. Now they are scratched and soggy round the sink. They never seem clean.

    3. Hate the pull-out larder cupboard. It doesn't store much and is a bother to pull open and then peer round the side of.

    4. Hate the built-in fridge that's so high the bottom shelf is above my eye level. (I'm 5'4''). It has a freezer underneath which puts the fridge part so high in the air it's unusable. We had to buy a freestanding fridge and use that instead.

    5. Hate the sink. It's a Belfast sink. Looks nice but the water falls from the tap from a height so that everything I rinse splashes everywhere. Also the way it fits under the wooden worktop makes it impossible to clean properly.

    6. Hate the way the sink is under the window. This means I cannot reach to open the window. Or even wipe the window sill. I wish they'd built the whole kitchen on the back wall of the room and I could have put my table in the window. Since it's in a extension they could have chosen to build a low window or patio door instead.

    7. Hate the floor tiles - big brown tiles with a photo of some woodgrain on each. Why didn't they just install a wooden floor?

    What do I like?

    1. The pan drawers are a good idea.

We are planning to totally refit our kitchen. The only things that are staying are the cooker, the kettle and the toaster. Although, if we could justify the expense, I'd swap the black cooker for a cream one. Black shows up the dust and every fingerprint.

Love our Tweeny waste disposal unit... all food waste down it. Seems really strange seeing friends scrape their food waste into a bin!!!

Hate our black glossy worktops, a total pig to keep clean and shiny you can't just wipe them clean as they dry smeary you literally have to wipe them clean and then buff them dry. Would NEVER get them again.... be warned :D
  • I had my large kitchen redone a few years ago and these are the things that I really like:
I have mostly large drawers with only 2 cupboards under the sink. I use them for all my crockery as well as my pots and pans and find I use much more of my stuff than just what I can see at the front. also much easier for my 81 year old mother!
I love my pull out larder and it was one of my must haves.
I now have the 'working triangle' they talk about- cooker-sink- prep and it definitely does cut down on travelling time.
As someone else mentioned- flat fronted units- hated cleaning the nooks and crannies of my last shaker style
Granite worktops- love them. Don't need to worry about putting stuff down.
    Enjoy your planning

  • I hate everything about my kitchen.

The only thing I like now is actually having my fridge in my kitchen after living here for 7 years and the fridge being in the spare room.

The in built oven has now gone and this is where my fridge stands. Across from this is the sink, with washing machine under neath and then the back door.

The slim line dishwasher has gone, along with the hobs and a free standing cooker is now in this space.

I detest cooking in it and to be honest I have no desire to experiment with recipes due to its lack of space. In an ideal world I'd move but cannot afford it, nor can I afford a new kitchen. I'd really only put in a new kitchen if I could afford to extend it.

So yes I envy all of you who have new kitchens, well actually no I envy all of you who just have reasonable space in your kitchen, lol.

  • I hate my chrome cooker as it never looks clean and is always streaky with our baby putting her hands on it and dogs rubbing against it. When I buy our next oven I'm going for white! I love my black slate floor, it doesn't show dirt up that our 4 large dogs bring in so it doesn't need to be mopped everyday like our last floor! I hate that it's a funny shape so we have no room for a table and chairs. We have a formal dining room but its a faff when you just want to eat your toast, having to get the table cloth and place mats out.

We had a cat flap like that. Unfortunately, I neglected to measure my cat's girth before I fitted it. It used to take him about five minutes to squeeze his way through. I was a bit bothered that he might have an accident before he got outside so had to replace it with a small dog flap.

Love - Original 1950s cabinets painted pillarbox red. Mad wallpaper.
Hate - Stupid, useless single oven. Draughty back door.
