  • Has anyone one here been awarded mobility component of pip for mental health reasons instead of physical as when i was going through M.R. process two different staff of DWP told me mobility is only awarded for physical disabilities when i questioned the points system and quoted criteria they both said it didn't matter and its only for physical disabilities you get mobility so would like to know if they were just saying it or if they do not give mobility for mental health issues. Thankyou x

Did they award you any rate for Care component for your mental health problems?if yes where did you get the points?i.e cooking?etc..? thanks
  • Just a quick question , what is the address i send my MR too? is it the one that is on top-right of the first page of my decision letter .

    thanks in advance =)
  • Thanks for the reply thats what I believed and tried to say but they both made out it was worded wrong and u misunderstood it so I would not get any mobility as mine was mental not physical. Makes me wonder if they are trying to change the criteria as I have not heard yet of anyone with mental illness getting mobility x

whether this helps or not i dont know but my disability is 95% mental and although i didnt qualify for mobility component payout i did get points awarded for it .(just not enough grrrr)

It doesn't make any difference what OP was awarded because awards for PIP are not based on condition/diagnosis. They are based on how your condition affects your daily life and for that reason everyone is different.

Yes your M.R. goes to the same place the decision letter came from so yes your right. But make sure you send it recorded delivery x

Yes was awarded 8 points for care in different areas and 4 for mobility but as previously mentioned by another poster it goes on how you are affected not the condition x

Most people with a mental illness will only get 4 points. The Pip assessment guide:
    B
Needs prompting to be able to undertake any journey to avoid overwhelming psychological distress to the claimant.

This descriptor applies to claimants with mental health conditions, where anxiety about going out is a significant feature for example moderate agoraphobia where going out provokes anxiety but is still possible with support. If agoraphobia is severe and the claimant is unable to go out even with support, descriptor 11e may be more appropriate.
‘Prompting’ means reminding, encouraging or explaining by another person.
‘Overwhelming psychological distress’ means a severe anxiety state in which the symptoms are so severe that the person is unable to function. This may occur in conditions such as generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and agoraphobia. For example: may apply to claimants who are able to follow the route of their journey themselves, for example they can work out where they need to go, follow directions and deal with unexpected changes in their journey. However, due to their mental health condition or impairment, they become overwhelmed with distress, unless they are prompted by another person. This means they are able to leave the home but are unable to complete any journey, including a short familiar journey, without prompting from another person.
Does not apply to claimants who are able to undertake some journeys without prompting or despite distress, 11a would be more appropriate
In rare circumstances 11b may apply to violent behaviour as a result of an underlying mental or behavioural health condition. They must be unable to control their behaviour and there must be good evidence that being accompanied by another person reduces a substantial risk of the person committing a violent act.
In rare circumstances 11b may apply to someone who is actively suicidal who may require another person to accompany them out of doors. There must be good evidence that the person is a high suicide risk by, for example, high level involvement of community mental health services and a care plan.
This descriptor is unlikely to apply to claimants with only sensory or cognitive impairments.

Hi clairebear, I was originally awarded high care and low mobility PIP purely for mental health reasons - from June 2013 until June 2015. However, I have just gone through the renewal process - where I was not called for another assessment - and I have been awarded high care and no mobility until 2017. I could not understand why they withdrew the mobility component - without another assessment, but your posts have made me wonder. I have gone from 11 points to 2 with no explanation as to why. So my thoughts are that they are not awarding mobility any more for mental health unless you are in the most extreme phase of your illness. Just my thoughts and experiences - I hope they help. x
