    Yes, did you read the items relevant to the Mk 6 as opposed to the whole list

    I didn't read it word for word, but I'm sure the page is Mk6 specific?

    Here's an even longer list of problems, this time for the Mk5, the accomplished vehicle that the Mk6 built upon;

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volkswagen/golf-v-2004/?section=bad

    I assume that you have a Golf?

    I can't wait for the Mk7 list, should be that kind of length again by this time next year.
    And that my son, is how to waft a towel!

    You definitely have the bug, it's a difficult thing to shake off.

    I have no doubts your Tiguan is better than a Mk5 Golf, so is my wheelybin, but you could have bought a better SUV, for less.

    Thanks, though I think you're actually coming second :D

    Ah, so it is about "winning on the internet" for you.

    I just enjoy a good debate, particularly when my opponent is considered a master debater.

    Very good :D

    To be 100% honest, this isn't just an internet thing for me, I spend a lot of my working life debunking German car myths, I have colleagues that used to think they were good (now all converted by me) and I often have to educate customers how not to waste their money.

    Define better though? As i've said before, in your mind it seems to be "subjectively more reliable".

    For example, in your mind a Jap medium hatch is "better" than a german medium hatch, but honest johns top 10 recommendations for medium hatches reads as follows :-

    1. Ford Focus (2011-)
    2. VW Golf (2009-) ie the mk6
    3. Honda Civic (2012-)
    4. Skoda Octavia (2004-)
    5. Audi A3 (2012-)
    6. Citroen DS4 (2011-)
    7. Vauxhall Astra (2009-)
    8. Mercedes A Class (2012-)
    9. VW Golf (2013-)
    10. Volvo V40 (2012-)

    So really with regard to your "better for less" statement, according to the very respected Honest John site, the only way i could have bought "better" was a Ford Focus, and as i said earlier, i dont like the styling of the new Focus - i think it has a weirdly long wheelbase and its a bit plasticky inside - otherwise i'd probably have had a go.

    And the only Jap car in the top ten was a Honda Civic and 50% are of German origin.

    This is going to sound desperate, but that Top 10 isn't compiled by the great man Honest John - it's signed off by 'David Ross', someone he appears to 'rent' from here;

    http://www.carkeys.co.uk/content/about-us

    If you look through Honest John's own answers section, almost every time someone mentions buying a Golf he tries to advise them to pick something else - he has the same view as me, the right one.

    I'll pop some in here;

    And a lovely one here;

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/32074/i30-or-used-golf-

    No mention of either car in his supposed Top 10.

    Also CK, 'any car will have it's issues' is an assumption you make due to the brands of cars you choose to run - there are some out there where this doesn't strictly apply.

    I dont have any particular "favourite" brand, and our household has a BMW z4, Renault Modus, VW Golf and a Honda Civic so we've varied tastes.

    The golf is only with us, but of the other three the civic has given us no problems (despite it being an all the toys one with leather, panoramic roof, sat nav, etc), neither has the BMW (year old z4). The Modus has got a dodgy key, so we're using the spare, so will need a new key at some point.

    Next purchase will probably be a mx5 just as a budget wee winter project .

    I guess we as a family take each car on its merits, rather than ruling out a particular brand just because of where it was made.

    You're too late late to the party to start with that - read the thread if you truly want to know the answer.
