I really don't get the "badge" thing. I have had a lot of nice cars but after the first couple of months they just become "a car". The only exception was an MX5, which I always loved driving -- most fun for least money. Obviously, I haven't had any super cars as I am basically a tightwad.

According to VW, it is normal to use 1l of oil every 1,000km (~625m).

So, if indeed you were achieving 60mpg, it would take 10.42g of fuel to cover 625m. At £1.40 per litre, this is £66.38.

Mix in £20.48 for a litre of oil (31% of fuel cost) and in real world costs you are probably achieving in the region of 40mpg from a 'normal' car.

    Sorry but this is nonsense.

You're extrapolating out the very 'worse case' upper boundary of what is defined as 'normal' by a manufacturer and then factoring that out over every single car they've ever made.

Honest John (himself, not the paid mercenary that also writes for 'The Sun') clearly says that the Hyundai I30 and Kia Cee'd are both better than the Golf.

You didn't even consider those cars, you bought the badge, hope it works out for you.

You're not getting it - i got the golf because i liked it

I didnt "like" either the Hyundai or the Kia. I'll be honest i would probably have got a Dacia before i'd have got either of those as i quite like the Dacia.

He's trying anything in an attempt to "win" the discussion. It's just a bit sad really and getting very boring.

I quite like the Dacia, although I've only driven a 2009 Sandero 1.6, from NW10 to the DVLA office, to get it registered in the UK.

With regard to someone 'not understanding the badge thing'; I've had a Jaguar XF Sportbrake for nearly a year now, and put nearly 70k miles on it. It's a brilliant car to drive, and the same engine that will do 60mpg in 8th, at 80mph on the motorway will also do Nurburgring in about 8m40, and the same car again has no problem coping with us, 2 kids, luggage etc, and it's also moved a lot of recording equipment (4 studios) from London to Bournemouth in one go. We're talking keyboards, speakers, the lot!

It's more than a car, and however expensive it was, it'll be changed in about 6 months time, and I'm seriously considering getting another one!

    Oh i know.

For all his posturing to the contrary hes clearly trying to "win" on the internet.

Personally, each to their own when it comes to cars. I buy a car because it impresses me. Not to impress anyone else.

Dacia are one company I wouldn't buy new until they've had chance to prove themselves.

People keep trumpeting that they have a good record on the continent -- but TUV would beg to differ (reliability seems to be rock-bottom on the old Logan and not much better on the Sandero), and the RHD cars we're getting in the UK are Indian built, and by some accounts not as well built as the Romanian cars.

I'd say that the guinea pigs to this marque run the risk of ending up with a lemon they can't shift after three years.

I'd have a Chevrolet before a Dacia just now.

Once again, I have worked as a VW Aftersales Manager, and had to explain to 1,001 TDi driver's that their massive oil usage is normal.

Please tell me that you don't consider Dacia a direct competitor?

Hyundai-Kia are now World's #4 (and probably fastest growing), Dacia are a budget brand using primarily obsolete Renault parts to produce the cheapest most basic form of transport, largely for poorer countries.

There is NO WAY you would buy yourself a Dacia, you made the above comment to belittle H-K.

Indeed -- Hyundais and Kias are now very much mainstream cars -- I'd consider them direct competitors to Ford/Vauxhall/VW/Toyota etc.

They have their weak points (they seem to have a few problems with transmissions) but generally their products are at least class-competitive.

Dacia, although I welcome any budget manufacturer (and I've owned Korean cars when they were the budget choice) are not in the same category. I think it is possible to like both VWs and Dacias, but they can't be directly compared.

Nor should they be -- a Polo is more than twice as expensive as a Sandero.
