I've enquired about a used car at a Large Audi dealer the car sounds just what I'm after however its a 200 mile round trip I haven't got a problem with that but they want me to pay them wait for it £1000 to enable them to get the car from their compound and prepare it etc The sales plank I spoke to said that if the car isn't as described and I'm not happy i will get this back however they didn't say when and I think £1000 upfront is abit steep. The car however will come with warranty and has only done 30000 miles and can be proved looks a very tidy car however they sent me by email about 14 pics and the list of goodies but a few I thought it would have aren't listed one was a CD player they are going to phone me monday to see where I'm at I think £1000 upfront is out of order. £250 maybe I can see where they're coming from if I'm not happy we've got this one at more dollar etc sir suits you.

Buying a car from a dealer 200 miles away would be a nightmare if it developed any faults. I'd look much closer to home myself.

If it's an Audi it's more of a case of when and what faults it will develop, rather than if.

Buy a different brand, and yes, closer to home.
And that my son, is how to waft a towel!

Buy a return train ticket for about £80 and go and see the Audi.. If you lik it, buy iy and come home in it.
  • Jees what sort of state is the car in ? sounds like it needs major cosmetic work before it can be looked at.

They've emailed me 14 photos and to be honest it looks a really tidy and looked after car wheels unmarked and looks good inside and out 30 000 miles from new all the history etc plus its a manual when nearly all the 3.0 tdis are auto
I've had four audiis now and I've never had any massive problems my present ones got 175000 on the clock and still runs sweet as a nut no oil use no coolant loss and goes up and down the m5 everyday

So why don't they just wheel it out for you to look at ? Any large dealership will have a bod with a bucket and sponge washing their stock.

As this is MSE I'd better make the obvious suggestion that you keep driving your current car then :).

If you do definitely still want to consider buying a car from so far away there is still no way I would be paying the garage anything at all up front. They presumably want to sell the car and you are prepared to travel 200 miles to look at it. You are clearly not a time waster so wanting any sort of money up front is a joke as far as I'm concerned. The fact that they are asking you to do so would be the second reason I'd be looking elsewhere for a car.

Given that your current car is fine you presumably aren't in a rush to buy a new car? In which case consider waiting for another car of the type you want to come up.

As it will be an approved used Audi, then you can get the repairs done at any audi dealer.

Bad idea. Apart from anything they've got your sizeable deposit (even if it is refundable) as a sign of commitment to purchase so they're hardly likely to lay a very big egg when it comes to negotiating a discount

What about something japanese like a Toyota, because they never go wrong do they?
