Can you wear black to a wedding?

The last few weddings I've been to there have been a few maxi-dresses. Personally I think they look bloody awful - fine if you're on the beach but they're just not wedding-wear. But I do appreciate that's just my opinion and clearly no-one agrees with me

Well, there's a big difference between a casual, cheap beach style maxi dress and some of the beautifully made higher quality ones such as this:

There's been some nice dresses in some of those links, thank you all.
I don't really want to say what ones I like in case I end up buying one and I'm 'outed' at the wedding. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!

Like I say, just personal preference. Those dresses look lovely for a holiday, nice meal out on the seafront maybe, but to me they're not suitable for a wedding. But hey, pretty much anything goes these days (apart from an actual wedding dress

Ebay.
I know it sounds a bit gross, but loads of people buy a pair and only ever try them on but then can't return them if they're the wrong size, or only wear them once to a wedding and then wash and sell them. You can wear your own undies underneath too if you want.0 -
Id wear black to a wedding. I havent been to a wedding in years but if I were invited Id wear my favourite black dress, its been worn everywhere from nights out to a funeral.
Re your weight, if you really arent happy with it, do something about it.
Easy said says me but I am far from thin and Ive put weight on over the last 4-5 years due to a couple of injuries, Ive lost 25 pounds in weight in the last 8 weeks and it hasnt been torture.
Its how you feel that matters, I know someone who is a size 20 who goes out of a night and wears short skirts and hotpants and she looks great, she has the confidence to carry it off
If you start now, you could make enough of a difference so that you feel better in what you are wearing.0 -

Appreciate all the help everyone, will check out all the links properly shortly.
One other thing...is there a 'usual' with regard to dress length. (Probably over thinking things here again.)
I clearly wont be going with a mini
but not sure if long/maxi things are frowned upon as the bridal party will be wearing long dresses?
Maxi dresses are perfectly acceptable for a wedding, as are cocktail or knee length dresses unless the invitation states a particular dress code...
Go for it,find a lovely outfit and enjoy the day0 -
My Tip for social occasions
If you go for black skirt or trousers don't wear a white blouse, you'll look like the waiting staff

Is that such a bad idea? I'd blend in nicely then.
I could collect tips and they'd pay for the outfit I'm having to buy. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!
