  • I'm surprised by the above, to be honest - to my mind, black is an absolute "no" for a wedding - no black, no white, no cream (a bit of all of those is fine, but not a black / white / cream dress).
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

    This is lovely:

I'd wear it with sheer black tights, bright pink shoes and handbag and probably something big in my hair too like this:

I don't have good bits at the moment. That's not me being dismissive, it's just that most of me is 'affected' iyswim. :D So it's not like simply trying to disguise a big bum or cover a tum etc.

I'd go for plain trousers or a skirt with a colourful, floaty longline top.
  • "Traditionally, black was a colour for mourning and funerals, so wearing it to a wedding was a way of letting the couple know how you felt about them getting married. Women weren't supposed to wear red either, it was apparently a way of signalling that you were the groom's secret mistress! "

"Green. You're not meant to wear green to a wedding. I don't know why."
Sorry cant work out how to quote properly

Green - dark green - is / was - traditionally the colour for mourning - or it was - until Queen Victoria changed the fashion and mourned in black

Hence the more recent association with black and mourning
However unless your a staunch follower of royal fashion I really dont see why you wouldnt wear black if you want to. ok - turning up in for instance a black wedding dress to someone elses wedding may be a little ......uncomfortable / difficult to explain ...and a black swimsuit will definately get you on the back row of the photos - but thats nothing to do with the colour...but a black suit...lovely - much better than one of those uncomfortable nylon nightmares with matching hats...

See I'd feel really strange in a black suit at a wedding, I'd feel like I'd come straight from a job interview!

Maybe I could go to Mothercare and just tell everyone we're having another. :rotfl:

As an aside, the white wedding dress only came into being in the Victorian times, up until then the brides wore any colour. the Victorians chose white because it was supposed to be virginal ;the other reason, white was the cheapest fabric that could be bought...so let's dress it up and make it colour foe virgins.

Other cultures wear white for funerals. I wore canary yellow when husband before current one died. I asked everyione else to wear bright colours because being a Military fineral there would be plenty of dark colours being worn... It was very colourful funeral

Budget...no idea. Cheap as poss I suppose as I expect I'll never wear it again.

Although if it was a choice between paying less and looking like a sack of spuds and paying more and looking like maybe only one or two spuds....I'd pay more. :D

You could always sell the dress/outfit on again on eBay afterwards. I've done that with several dresses over the past 3-4 years - bought them for an occasion such as a wedding, worn them once/twice at the most, then sold them on eBay - several of them were "plus sizes" - I found that the plus sized dresses sold for good money - a bidding war on one meant I nearly got back the cost of the dress :)

(I think my favourite eBay dress sale was an Evans maxi dress that I had bought brand new on eBay for less than £3 - either it was a quiet night on eBay or I had bad taste :D Wore it once then lost weight so it didn't fit anymore. Someone paid £20 for it on eBay :D)

It would be a talking point!

But I thought the fashion while pregnant was making the bump as obvious as possible these days rather than wearing long, loose tops.

In the Kaliko sale (see online) is a dark navy maxi dress which is incredibly flattering on for we larger ladies. I am wearing it to an upcoming wedding with a bolero cardigan (almost any colour would look good) flat sandals and a navy fascinator.
Honestly - other people will be too busy worrying about their own defects, but do try the above dress - I love it! :)
