A nice black dress would be fine, and like above maybe get a complimentary coloured scarf, maybe hot pink or something, to make it seem a little more upbeat. Also maybe try a nice dark deep purple as they can look absolutely wonderful.

Like is too strong a term. :D

When you're fat, you go more with 'that'll do'. :rotfl:

I've seen bigger women look absolutely stunning, don't write yourself off!

I wore a size 14 dress to the last wedding I went to, and I looked pretty darn good if I do say so myself! :rotfl:

I bet we can help you find something you'll feel nice in, there's far more out there in bigger sizes than there used to be, and there are things like Spanx which are miraculous!

I disagree ~ of course you can wear black trousers to a wedding ~ just with a smart top in a colour which suits you, and teamed with classy accessories.

I think that would be fine if you were just an evening guest, but personally I'd want to be a bit more dressed up if I was going for the full day.

There are loads of dresses in larger sizes that flatter figures.

Treat yourself to a shopping day (try on, book a personal shopper, learn to accessorise with bright colours, try on fascinators etc).

If you find a brand that suits you, look on eBay for a bargain, you will also have an idea of what suits you with accessories. I'm not advocating spending hundreds in house of Fraser or debs - just saying use their wide ranges, try loads on, use their personal shopper and get an idea.

Traditionally, black was a colour for mourning and funerals, so wearing it to a wedding was a way of letting the couple know how you felt about them getting married. Women weren't supposed to wear red either, it was apparently a way of signalling that you were the groom's secret mistress!

The only real colour rule now is that you shouldn't wear white, only the bride is allowed a white dress at a wedding. Even that gets stretched a bit now though and its fine to wear patterned dresses with a lot of white in and so on.

It is all a bit weird, I'll grant you that.

I was always told green is also bad luck unless the bride is Irish. Pearls are for tears, and red roses symbolise the groom's blood.

Don't we make life difficult for ourselves!

I think black will be fine as it's not a summer wedding as long as you wear a coloured jacket and handbag/shoes.

In other words, if you could get away with your outfit for a funeral, then it's not OK for the wedding.

Apparently the bride isn't supposed to wear green in case people think its to hide the grass stains! :rotfl:

There are some bonkers 'rules' out there.

Green. You're not meant to wear green to a wedding. I don't know why.

When I was a kiddie, I had a 'posh' (-ish) green dress which I though would look good to go in to a wedding, but no. Mum bought the same dress in red for the wedding.

It was summer, I sported a formal red dress, red hair and red face in every photograph. I looked like I was about to burst.

But at least I wasn't wearing green. It was so important I wasn't wearing green.

EDIT: Sorry, cross posted with the last two posters.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

I saw an ad for this company the other day, they do bigger sizes and 10% off your first order. Loads of dresses there.
  • You can wear a black outfit to a wedding, my son's step nmother did and she looked fab, she dressed the outfit up with red and white accessories.

Being Mother of the Groom I wore Gold, the Bride's mother wore a royal blue cocktail suit, we all wore hats, the three of us are on the ample side and the potgrpah of the three of us one of my favourites..

Wear black, and enjoy the day...
  • I think black is acceptable at a wedding these days, although personally I would go for navy blue or plum given the choice.
