I think that's really the key thing, people who ignore the 'customs' without being close enough to know that it won't cause offence do so with a lack of humility and respect. Doing so through ignorance is one thing and its rather foolish of anyone to get silly about it in any case but especially if the 'etiquette breaker' knew no better, but knowing its not always advisable but deciding to go ahead anyway is, IMO discourteous and tactless.

I've been to weddings where the dress code was black or including black, and it would be similarly rude to not wear it when asked.

Those shoes are fab! They don't have any in my size or price range though
