Sorry, I think that most of those are quite unsuitable for a wedding, particularly for a middle aged woman.

Just wanted to say that I'm glad people are taking the time to suggest things and post links.

Obviously since no-one knows me, they wont know what I'd like or might suit but the wider the range of stuff that's suggested, the more useful it is for me to try to narrow down what it is I do and don't like, if you see what I mean.

Also despite being 'middle aged' (although I've not hit 50 yet ;)) and fat, I'm told I don't actually look anywhere near my true age. And no, it wasn't because people were trying to be kind. :p

I am afraid I don't like any of them either, they look more suited to evening holiday wear to me.

Out of those linked to - this one seems perfectly wedding-y to me, with a suitable jacket / cover / etc

Also on that site might be some other options for the OP - this, with a jacket (etc) would be lovely:

I've never bought anything from this site, so I don't know about quality, etc.

Since gaining weight, I wouldn't wear anything strapless, but that's just me.

There are lots of dresses in that sale though, and I really like some of them.

I stopped wearing dresses when I gained weight, so buying a dress this year has been a big deal for me, lol. The person I went shopping with has said I should wear it for her wedding, even though I don't think it's smart enough - it's very cheap and is a summer holiday dress really. But it's so flattering! Here it is

It's lined, and I've checked that underwear can't be seen through it. It has black at the top, so your bra doesn't show through. Stock's low though, although you might find a bigger size instore.

I'm now going to be told off for wearing green :D

  • I think a good quality maxi dress can look really nice for a wedding. There are differences between casual ones and 'dressed up' ones.

I own about a dozen maxi dresses (I REALLY don't like my legs!) and all but one are 'Day' dresses. I wear them to the pub, work (smart casual) and to town shopping. The remaining one is the one I bought for my cousin's wedding nearly 2 years ago. It is a lot heavier than the others, much better quality and in a floaty material. It is much too dressy to wear to town shopping!! (In fact I wore it for the second time about a month ago for a posh meal with the OH).

Then again I've also worn a red dress to two different weddings and a red skirt with black corset to another. (One of which had the bridesmaids in a pale green colour) So I might not be the best person to comment!!

I have just had a quick flick back through photos of some of the weddings and there have been lovely maxi dresses and lovely black dresses worn by lots of different women. Some with fuller figures, some thin, some young and others middle aged - one thing though I have noticed is that the people that looked happiest and most relaxed are the ones who are comfy in what they are wearing. There are some people in 'Wedding' outfits that don't smile in any of the photos and just look uncomfortable - Wear something that makes you smile even if it is just a small smile!

I do like that dress, but I always think that maxi dresses at a wedding look best on those who wouldn't have worn them first time around if you get my drift? I also think that they look best with a shrug, which would then make them (to me) not formal enough for a wedding.

I think you could easily wear that dress to a wedding but for me it would be better shortened to calf length and accessorised with a jacket/hat/fascinator picked out from the colours in the dress.

I thought that was really pretty but it's not available for sale.

The tight person in me quite liked the idea of buying something not overly posh/weddingy just so I could wear it again at other times.

The quality is good re the higher end price dresses. The return policy is ok too, I sent a dress back because it was not what I expected it to be when I saw it. the fabric defnitiely was not what I thought suitable. No problems I got refunded. the sizing can be a bit on the small size, no problem returning and asking for a larger size to try.

The courier kept laughing because she made four trips to the house in the space of a week. I would just ring the number quoted on the retun label and they came and picked up the parcel.
