Hiya Ruth, so good it served to put a smile on your face, but I always remember that very helpful person who helped me no end with the "Reminder thread" last year, you deserved no end of stars for that alone! :grinheart I do hope work picks up soon, the cost of new tyres too, still, don't begrudge the latter, Ruth, as they can be definite life-savers!
Re the reasonable meals: Try the "Old Style MoneySaving" under the "Home & Play" part, there are loads of cheap meal to be had; search around it and look back to some good old oldies too.
Also, if you haven't already got one, then how about one or all of you investing in an Ar!os slow cooker. We bought one on special offer a couple of years ago and it does DH & I casseroles, hot pots etc which is plenty enough for 2 days so ideal for 5 and 2 younger ones. You can buy them small, med or large, though they go by liters, but a largish one of those is ideal for our DD, her hubby and 5 children.
A few veggies (carrots, suede, parsnips) with perhaps a breast of lamb, or maybe diced lamb or chicken breasts; all meat optional depending on budget and varying likes.
Then about 1/2 hour before serving pop in enough frozen peas and sweetcorn for each person and colour (well, I love colour in such dishes) and you'll have a delicious meal without costing too much - and it can all be prepared early in the morning! To fill you up a little more without too much cost, have some crusty rolls & butter in a dish and you've a very reasonable and filling meal.
I have been looking but am yet to find any proper recipes on that board. I had to leave after a short while as they were being horrible to lovely Jamie O. I will go back later though and have another go.
I do have a slowcooker. It won't help with my saturday meals as i don't get to my friends until about 15:00 but i was discussing with my mum about her using it. My brother bought it for me some time ago but i was always scared of it burning the house down and now i eat at mums every day and not at home. I will be trying to use it when i get my own place though.
Your lamb meal is making my mouth water. I will read it to mother later and see if she will cook it if i buy the ingredients. Where does how does it cook though, i thought you needed whatever you're cooking to be quite wet...... I've only ever cooked a chilli lolCrimson - Jamie Oliver has just started new tv series about budget meals. I watched the programme the other night - there was a lady who was throwing out lots of food each year so he went thru some recipes with her.........very good and he gives an estimate cost per portion of meal. Think if you google something like Jamie Oliver budget menus there are free recipes online from the series.....the whole idea being that you don't have to spend money on buying the recipe book. Or watch the programmes on tv......good inspiration for cooking nice food on a budget. Hope this helps.
I bought mother the book and may have won one for myself on here. I love his series but we watched the latest one last night and i would only actually cook 1 of the dishes. Its nice to have a drool over though. I haven't yet watched the others but i intend to. My current favourite dish is a Jamie O dish and is very very cheap but it is pasta and my daddy refuses to eat pastaSilly daddy.

Sue thanks for the recipe I'm going to try that
Jakes-mum glad to hear you're feeling a bit better
Re: Jamie's budget meals I have a bit of an issue although it's a good idea in principle. He seems to be basing each program on buying a huge joint, costing over £10, and eking that out over a few meals - which is OK if you can afford the joint to begin with but what if you can't? I suppose slow-cooked meals aren't 'sexy' enough for TV?
Also why does he have to put chilli in everything? We don't all like chilli! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Had food shop delivered yesterday and forgot a few bits so did a small shop today.
Sfd's are still 8/18. I shouldn't have any other expenses until next monday now so can hopefully reach 18 as long as I only have 2 spend days over the next few weeks?0 -
Rosy -I don't like chilli, and leave it out of recipes. I can see that if you bought a joint or a larger fish and portioned it out over three meals - mainly bulking it out with veg on second and third day, its actually what my grandparents and my parents did when we were little and money was much tighter than it is now for them. It also makes us eat more veg
BUT Jamie O is not for everyone, and I am open to having a scout round the internet to find something nutritious and cheap....like the freezing of blackberry's at the moment to see me thru the Winter months.....defrost some in the morning to go on my yoghurt and automatically had 1 of my 5 each day.....and they taste delicious in the middle of the Winter when the shop ones have no taste to themSPC No:118:j (6) £468.74 (7)

Mmmm cheapy dinner recipes
my chicken and bacon pancakes were cheap, best thing is you can chuck anything you want in them
Things like sausage hotpot, chicken casserole etc are cheap and cheerful, my slow cooker and casserole dish are my favourite cooking items as they both just seem to be 'bung it in and leave it alone to cook' :rotfl: I also find things like stir fry cheap as the supermarkets always seem to have those big trays of veggies in the reduced section, buy some sharwoods noodles and a blue dragon sauce and your done.
Im actually re-writing my recipe book tonight as my old one was falling apart so I might be back with other ideas as I come acroos themoh and have a look at delia online, some are super cheap meals, some not so much, but worth a looksee
no pennies today, went to the next outlet store AND Mr T  (I know! I went to 2 stores! :j) and spent a small fortune on Miss Lily as she really needed clothes and a new coat (somehow ended up with 2 but we will skate ove that one) and paid for it all by card
EDIT: thinking back to when I was little and my dad was out of work I do remember my mum making cheese and bacon scones for tea quite often which we got served up with salad or new potatoes or jacket spud, was very cheap and filling though I do remember we got very fed up with thm after 6 straight months of them nearly every day :eek:SPC No 002 SPC(3) £285/£250 (4) £519.84/£500 (5) £768.32/£500 (6) £911.30/£600 (7) £913.23/£600 (8) £1184.82/£750 (9) £2864.04/£750 (10) £3846.25/£1000 (11) £1779.72/£1000 (12) £1596.55/£1000 (13) £1534.70/£1000 (14) £775.60/£1000 (15) £700.20/£1000 (16) £2081.34/£1000 (17) £1691.15/£1000 (18) £225/£10000 -

Oh cheese & bacon scones nom nom
I sometimes bung sweetcorn in them too
I agree the premise of eking out one joint through the week is good, it just seemed to me that £14 for the original joint is a bit over the top
Oops back on topicpotted £4.20 today
