What does dress your age really mean????

Just wondering as I got ready to go out tonight if the way you dress has changed a lot since you were younger?

For example tonight I'm wearing black leggings, a black mini tutu type skirt, t-shirt with a ribcage on it and black sneakers with purple stars on them.............at 37 I doubt I am likely to change my style much now but lots of the women of my age seem to have morphed into "beige cardi wearers"

Thoughts?

Everybody can wear whatever they like and whatever they feel comfortable in.

They shouldn't be mocked whether that choice is a tutu or a beige cardigan, neither is better. Some women might even own both!

Honestly? I think it means don't try to look like you belong to a different generation.

That said, I was wearing stuff like that before it was fashionable (and don't get me started on Sienna Miller stealing Boho from me) so, if you've always dressed like that then stuff 'em!

  • I can only say that at your age I could never have got away with wearing what you are tonight............

But having said that it depends on what size you are?

If you've still got a great figure etc - then why not! x

Not meaning to mock just curious as to such a huge change of styles for some women when they get to a "certain age"

This, but I think part of growing into style is knowing when to toe the line and where individuality borders on inappropriacy. I wouldn't wear what I want and damn them when on my husband's arm at a corporate do, for example. But I regularly cut the lawn in all kinds of weird get ups. The former reflects on DH and to an extent me. While people who he knows on a business level do live near us they can take us as they find us on OUR territory, but we should make the effort IMO at theirs. I'm not saying 'blend in'. If its appropriate and stylish, it can still be 'you', just maybe a you cocktail, not you straight up.

I hit the big 40 earlier this year and am about as far removed from being a 'beige cardi wearer' as it is possible to get. I don't think my style has changed that drastically over the years. I am not a massive follower of fashion and know what really suits and flatters me. I think it is important for people to just feel comfortable and confidant in what they choose to wear. I am known for my love of shoes and have way too many. Cant see that ever changing, even when I am an old granny ;)
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.
  • Depends where you are and who you are with.
As ive got older i dress more classically in dresses rather than leggings if i go out for a night out.

Really? Do you genuinely think you will still be wearing this kind of outfit when you are 57? or 77?

At 37 if you look after yourself you probably still have the figure and looks to pull this look off. In 5 years time you might find for example that your chest and cleavage look a bit more wrinkled than the rest of your face and body, so your neckline might get adjusted up a bit. In 10 years from now you might feel the tone of your inner thighs has gone a bit to pot and that leggings are no longer such a good look to pull off.

I think most of us adjust our signature style as we get older to minimise the bits of our body we are not so happy with. That doesn't mean necessarily morphing from a sex kitten into a toothless tabby overnight though :D
