At your age .....I was wearing bra-less maxi-dresses & long straight hair. But there again - so was everybody else of my generation - hippy, hippy days. :-D

Now at 70, I try and dress a tad more conservatively - at present (been gardening) I'm in black bootcut jeans, fit-flops & white M & S teeshirt - and a bra!!!! Shorter hair now, as well x

Not meaning to mock just curious as to such a huge change of styles for some women when they get to a "certain age"

    Are you sure?

If 37 is 'a certain age' then that's a bit depressing too!

I won't wear leggings any more ....someone referred to plump legs in shiny black leggings as "looking like a couple of black puddings" ....and as my legs are not (ahem) as slim as they once were ........:D

I still wear converse boots btw ...as well as M & S footgloves - sadly can no longer wear my lovely lovely high heeled shoes :(

    BTW - I'm 70 :D

I don't go for the dressing how society expects. The only time I dress as I am expected is my work uniform.

OP I think your outfit sounds amazing
The opposite of what you know...is also true

I prefere 'dress your size' rather than age.
I find it quite refreshing to see a 'hip' older person or demure younger one.
But if you have a massive saggy !!!! please don't JUST wear see-through leggings. I would never go bra-less for the same reason, even though im only 21 my hooters would be inappropriate without a bra.

I'm 54 and don't own a beige cardi yet. I'm a jeans and t-shirt type, long hippie skirts, cut off cargo pants in the summer, layers of hand knits in the winter. (Nice hand knits, not beige!) I've been dressing that way since I was a student, with variations as to what the current shape of jeans or top is of course. But I'm still the same weight as I was thirty years ago, just that it has changed shape slightly. So why change?

I do think though that as you get older you get more confident about wearing what you want to wear, whether it's the latest fashion or the same as you've worn for decades. I'd never have gone out in your purple or black outfit at fifteen let alone fifty for the simple reason it's just not my style, you'd probably say the same about some of the things I wore at your age or younger. Does it matter?

Really? Do you genuinely think you will still be wearing this kind of outfit when you are 57? or 77?

At 37 if you look after yourself you probably still have the figure and looks to pull this look off. In 5 years time you might find for example that your chest and cleavage look a bit more wrinkled than the rest of your face and body, so your neckline might get adjusted up a bit. In 10 years from now you might feel the tone of your inner thighs has gone a bit to pot and that leggings are no longer such a good look to pull off.

I think most of us adjust our signature style as we get older to minimise the bits of our body we are not so happy with. That doesn't mean necessarily morphing from a sex kitten into a toothless tabby overnight though :D

I'm nearly 5 years older than OP and my chest and cleavage are still fabulous :D I'm starting to get lines on my face, but I don't understand why somebody my age would have a wrinkly cleavage?

As for dressing your age, I can do both. I've never owned a beige cardi but after I reached 40 I tried to buy things that weren't black occasionally. I still like the goth look, but to volunteer in a school or toddler group I am more likely to wear a flowery top from Next. I wouldn't have dreamed of shopping there when I was younger though.

I don't wear leggings or little skirts anymore because I'm fat now. Also, I wouldn't go to a wedding in a black velvet dress with a lace-up cleavage nowadays, as I've done in the past. I've bought something specifically for a wedding later this year, to fit in with a theme that I dislike intensely, but with age has come the feeling that my personal preferences can be put aside for one day.

Last week I bought shoes that weren't black for the first time ever, but they're not beige :D My teenagers are laughing at me today because I used a beige handbag that my MIL gave me. It's a kipling bag, and I like it, but I think I'd prefer any other colour. If I'd bought it myself I'd have chosen black or purple, and those preferences have stayed with me. I'm not going to start liking beige anytime soon.

Lucky you jellyhead. I am also 5 years older than the OP and though I have no wrinkles on my face, I can see some wrinkles on my cleavage where the skin is thinner than the face. May be to do with the size of your assets perhaps. I am ahem generously endowed :o

The post wasn't intended to mean though that it was a foregone conclusion that a given part of your body would look a bit rubbish at a certain age, just that SOME part of your looks are likely to deteriorate a bit with age and most of us who like to look good tweak our dress styles to disguise this if we can.

I have cardies in every colour! I have a very practical waterproof jacket with lots of pockets and you can have my Birkenstocks when you pry them from my cold dead hands! I also own several nice dresses and scrub up quite nicely on occasion.

Clothing isn't a competition, is it? Why must everything a woman does be open for criticism and judgment from other women? Why do we care so much what other people look like?
