From what I understand the GTI's were built in Germany but the base spec models were built elsewhere, I thought they all had galvanised panels, hence why I was surprised at rusting, if the history of the car (eg replacement substandard panels or paint) is not known then this could be why? I power wash my car regularly and it gets a coat of wax throughout the year, so I would have noticed rusting, the last time I had a car with any rust was a Triumph Dolomite all them years back

its rare to get rusting from top down. Rusting typically occurs from underneath, just poorly conceive under body protection can kick up water into the panels from underneath and cause rusting.
  • I've just completed the Small Claims Action online, fingers crossed I get a result. I don't normally like going through hassle but this has become a matter of principle for me. Just because Volkswagen are a big company they think they can treat people like dirt...well I've got news for you Mr VW. Win or lose, atleast I'll get satisfaction from the fact that I didn't cave in easily...

couple of questions, has it been main dealer serviced since new, has a stamp in the book for corrosion check, ever been in a collision on the fron end.

if serviced by dealer, corrosion checked at intervals, never had any repair to the wings (or aftermarket pattern part wings fitted) then wi would be contacting the dlealer again.

if not reguarly serviced by vw (or vw parts used at vat reg garage) not stamped for corrosion checks at intervals, had a repair to it, then i would give up trying for the corrsion warranty, if the rust isnt bad i.e surface rust ask body shops for quates to correct using epoxy sealer primer.

Havent read the rest of the posts but is it a mk4? Rust in the wings is common for them as there is a water tro in the inside of the wheel arch which went for the mk 5

Haven't read the whole of the thread but my sister has just had her 2 front wings replaced under warranty on her 55 plate Passat estate with no trouble whatsoever.

She was looking into getting them replaced herself from her own pocket until a bit of googling told us about the warranty, common problem apparently!

Guess it's hit and miss with dealers.

On a side note i have a 1997 golf, 2003 polo and my sister has the 2005 Passat...funny how the newest car out of the 3 is the one with the rust and the most general problems!

Looked into getting mine done after last years offer of £500 towards costs. Phoned up 9 months later to be told would need assessing again. Made appoinment.

    so the outcome?

Result. VW to pay 100% for replacement wings etc. Went to dealer at 10am. Phone call at 3pm to say all sorted in my favour. Just need to wait for parts to arrive then book into bodyshop. :T
