    Update:
Visited the local VW dealer again and the warranty specialist recognised the problem straight away. However, the bad news is that VW are only prepared to contribute 50% and the other 50% would have to come from the Dealer as a good will gesture. Since my car wasn't serviced at that franchise they couldn't do any good will gesture. I would have to go back to where it was serviced (which is 90 miles away)! Just written an email to Volkswagen UK to see what they have to say.

Got to say from a personal point of view, having never been fixed to one brand, and having owned a Honda, Toyota, Peugeot, VW, Seat, Ford, Saab, and Mazda, the VW was the best all rounder with build quality being the best. Honda was reliable yes, but felt quite cheap inside and plastic/flimsy.

I have terrible news for you Stu ('20vt' = VAG fanboy?).

You have totally fallen for VW Group's biggest con - perceived quality.

Yes, the very reliable Honda does have some plasticky trim here and there, I cannot deny, but, have you any idea what many of the 'mechanical' components on a VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat are made out of? There are some bits under the bonnet that wouldn't look out of place in the centre of a Kinder Surprise egg. Water pumps, tensioners, clutch slave cylinders...

I like to know where the cheap plastic is on my car, so that I can keep an eye on it and know it isn't going to leave me stranded...
And that my son, is how to waft a towel!

  • Update 2:

Received a call from the Volkswagen Exec office. The lady admitted that it was a known issue and would discuss things further once the car was showing as registered to me (on their system it's still under the previous owner).

She asked me to go to the dealer to update my details by taking the V5 with me. Although she didn't specifically say that they would do the repair for free, she certainly gave that impression as she said she would also liase with the dealer and ask why, if it is a warranty issue, the dealer only offered 50%. She gave me her contact details and said she would be in touch again by next Wednesday, so hopefully a good outcome... :)

Excellent news! I'm glad your father received a satisfactory outcome eventually - shame that Volkswagen tried to wriggle out of at the first point of contact. This is one reason why I have high regard for Japanese car makers; they seem to always fix things under recalls rather than the customer having to fight nail and tooth.

    ...........
  • Just received a final call from the Exec Office and VW Uk are not moving from 50% goodwill. Told the lady I would be seeking to recover the cost of repair through small claims court.

Does anyone know the chances of winning through court for 12 year anti-corrosion warranty? I feel so strongly that I may end up taking them to court.

Very disappointed in their stance, and it's safe to say this will be the last VW that I buy. To top it off, the car's had many faults. I've owned a few Japanese cars previously, and a Vauxhall once, and never had so many problems.
