Mine has done just over 120k miles; the rust is just developing in the form of a few small air bubbles in the paint-work, near the edge of the front wheel-arches. I probably wouldn't have noticed it had I not seen a post on one of the owner's forum as it isn't really visible unless looking close up.
From what I understand the GTI's were built in Germany but the base spec models were built elsewhere, I thought they all had galvanised panels, hence why I was surprised at rusting, if the history of the car (eg replacement substandard panels or paint) is not known then this could be why? I power wash my car regularly and it gets a coat of wax throughout the year, so I would have noticed rusting, the last time I had a car with any rust was a Triumph Dolomite all them years back :cool:0 -
Perhaps you would like to elaborate on how it wasn't helpful or any less helpful than your reply?
To fill the thread up with a picture of your un-rusty Golf was pointless and helped the OP how?.
I just pointed out that fact, to try and stop you from posting further useless info.
If you feel the need to post pictures of your car ( willy waving).
Go do it on the Golf owners Forum, where you can all tell each other how superior you are.0 -

As asked , how was it any less helpful than your response? It seems you are WW, I already elaborated on that I find it surprisiong that the Golf has rusted, do they not used galavanised steel for the panels? I have stone chips on mine and they have not rusted, hence why I asked, if you don't like my posts then just skip it and move onto the next. As others have mentioned modern cars don't rust as such, so it could be that the OP's relative's car has had substandard repairs in the past?0 -

My response was to you, so was no help to the OP.
Your post was just an excuse to put a picture of your 8 year old banger, thinking we would be impress. You failed.
You only elaborated after your WW post which was pointless0 -

Lucky ladies only I'm afraid
It would be interesting (for me if nobady else) to see pics of the offending rust some of the posters talk about.
One of the neighbours has an 11year old Mk4 and there is no rust on that either.

No excuse, there are forums for that elsewhere, but as you can see, the 8 year old banger has no rust, no need to impress anybody bar myself, it almost seems as if you are somewhat envious, from you responses in other threads you seem to attack a lot of people, seems it is my turn in this thread0 -

So how does the picture help the op?0 -

It's hardly an 'old banger'! The picture did no harm, and made the thread more interesting to users like me. No need to take everything so seriously...
Edit: the argument over the relevance of the photo has been far more distracting to the original topic of this thread than DUTR's post.0 -

The OP asked for advice. Not for people to post pics of their non rusty cars.0
