Each and every substance on earth is made up of chemical compounds!0

At no time, in any of the OP's posts did s/he say that s/he had any allergic or anaphylatic reactions to the scents/perfumes used by the parent - just that s/he objected to the smells.
Obviously any parent would do their utmost to remove any substance that was damaging to the physical health of a child. To react in a similar manner to phobias would not in my opinion, be anything other than detrimental to a mental health problem.0 -

Its shocking really, nearly all of us have the deadly substance dihydrogen monoxide in our homes and even ingest it on a daily basis!

maybe to remove the mental health advise, nasty comments? yes. although i have been in contact with several mental health charities. Two have already gotten back to me and said they are concerned about the content/lack of moderation on this thread towards somebody with suicidal ideation.
What do you think the solution is?
Martin's too busy with financial advice to moderate the discussion boards. If they take up too much resources, he'll just take them away and we'll be left with only financial matters to discuss.
Maybe one solution might be to refuse to let us discuss suicide at all, in the same way that we're not allowed to discuss a certain missing child. But a lot of people have made friends on here over the years and would rather get support from those online friends than a different forum, if they were struggling with depression.52% tight0 -

Mojisola, you are known as a reasonable person on these boards, I just think that if you were aware of the effects that some chemicals have on some people who are allergic or sensitive to solvents and perfumes, or who have hypersensitive noses, or even some people with asthma, then you would avoid them where possible.
I haven't used strong smelling things for decades - perfumes, cleaning agents, household sprays, shower gels, etc.
I find it very unpleasant to have to sit close to someone wearing a heavy perfume or strong smelling hairspray. I think if you don't use these things yourself, you notice them all the more.
I also know someone who has multiple chemical sensitivity who has had to live in a very remote, primitive house for years because she gets very ill when exposed to these things so I don't underestimate the problems they can cause.
It isn't the fact they are "chemicals" that's the problem - it's that some people react to some chemicals. The person with MCS is still exposed to "chemicals" every day but she manages to avoid the ones that cause her problems most of the time.0 -
I used to have severe OCD about germs and contamination, my mum was told by the mental health team to not "play up" to any of my fears as it would just reinforce them and she would be supporting and encouraging my OCD to get worse.
By your mum going along with your wishes she would be reinforcing in your mind that everything your doing is normal and fine.
I'm sure your mum loves you OP, but just doesn't want to encourage your fears.0 -

At no point has OP ever said that he is allergic to or suffers pain from chemicals in toiletries that his mother uses, only that he has a phobia and big companies are making money from the stink they make.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
