I asked the buyer if she wanted to do cash on collection and she said she is more than happy to once i refund her, now i'm slightly worried about her giving me fake money now.

If you go to the transaction you refund via the refund link in the transaction itself.

This is a very common scam and usually involves the Paypal account being hijacked.

If you are at all unsure about refunding, call Paypal and advise them of all the story so far.

Well, in certain markets yes, and the iphone market must be one of the most scammable, particularly to those that only ever sell one.

I just called PayPal and they said that nobody is hijacking my PayPal account definitely and it's safe for me to do the refund.

I cancelled the transaction on ebay, just waiting for the buyer to cancel from her end so i can do the refund, she seems to be taking her time tho.

It's unlikely, but just double check the money when she hands it over to you and be sure to count it.

When I worked in a shop we used to have a pen that told you, many shops have scanners. No idea where you'd get the pen from and it's probably not worth it, but the option is there if you wish to look into it. Otherwise, just hold the notes up to the light. Check a range of notes or one random note as people could put real ones at the front and back and fake ones in the middle.

If anything seems really dodgy you could always say no sale.

I didn't mean yours, it is usually the buyer in cases like this. Their account is hijacked, the 'buyer' comes and collects and then the real owner discovers the funds have gone, files a chargeback and the seller loses out.

You can't stop it happening to others, but you can help prevent it happening to you.

Never click links for anything that comes via email, particularly ebay and paypal emails.

Keep an eye on your Paypal and any requests for passwords, change of email etc, deal with immediately. Keep your PC uptodate with the relevant antivirus protection.
