Well I didn't expect to be so controversial! .. but v. interesting to read ppls opinions, and thanks all for the advice.....

btw, I'm female with no dependents. Of course I would have a different attitude if I had to take somebody else into account, I certainly wouldn't be so hedonistic!

If buying's right for you (collective 'vous' not aimed at any one person), then go do it! You're fitting in nicely with societies expectations and I've decided not to. There are plenty of places in the world where renting is perfectly acceptable for the whole of one's life, and who knows? I certainly do not intend to spend the rest of my years in this over-crowded, rather unfriendly country.

At the moment being hedonistic and having fun is what's right for me right now. I would LOVE to have an entrepreneurial spirit, but other than my ISA, I know nothing about financial markets (isn't the stock market about to crash too if you listen to opinion on this board)? _ I'm just not the kind of person who can make millions out of a pound.

I also do not want to move inland to afford a property. I'm happy living by the sea, and it's where my job is which I love. You've probably realised that owning my own property just isn't important to me anymore, especially not to the extent I move away from the area and leave behind family, friends etc etc.

Finally, if anyone's offended by any of my 'tones' then you have my apologies, but I stand by what I've said. This board is a place to express opinion, and I respect everyone's opinion on here (even the downright nasty one's that provide much amusement).

10 years time I'll come back and let you know how I got on, but I won't be doleful, or regretful. I've made this decision with my eyes open and I feel happy and liberated.

Now then, http://www.travelsupermarket.com/ (Some of Martin's money saving ways have rubbed off on me) ;-)

HI DD, not idiots per say, but from this general tone from OP. There have been countless times people have been slagged off for buying, and it's just nasty and rubs me up the wrong way.

I see what you mean. I kinda just read the OP with a "pinch of salt" because the OP must have been pretty depressed when he/she wrote it and so I could understand the negative vibe.

A lot of the posts outside of the MFW and DFW threads where I tend to hang out seem to have an "edge" to them, but sometimes it makes for an interesting debate.

From reading a lot of similar discussion threads, the main issue people have with renting is that they have to keep moving because the landlord decides to sell the place, or there is a falling out, etc. I was lucky that when I rented before buying my first house, it was from a company rather than an individual so once I was in there I was left well alone, any issues were sorted quickly and I could have syated there forevermore if I wanted. Plus they didn't have an issue with any changes to the decorations. Hmnn, should have stayed there really, the rent was a lot lower than the interest payments on my mortgage!! :)

You never know in your travels you might find an opportunity somewhere, set up a small sea-front business in Kerela that grows into a massive multinational & when in twenty years you return, you'll be able to buy the whole of Bournmouth. :T

    Have a wonderful time
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

Most people buy a place with a partner, and don't have a 30K deposit.

We'd all like a nice two bed house with a private garden, but it's called "the property ladder" for a reason.

I had a 16K deposit and a 32K salary, and I found somewhere perfectly nice in zone 2 London. It's not the greatest part of London to live, but it's a good start. You sound a little snobby to me if you can't find somewhere to live in your area.

If you want to spend your 30K, go ahead - that's not my problem. We need people like you to fund the economy!

I hated renting. Other people's furniture, not being allowed to put things on the wall without asking permission, the cost of accidental damage to furniture/flooring (where I wouldn't have minded a few dents/scratches if it was mine and i did it), then a rent that was more than the interest on a £200k loan!! It just didn't feel like home.

I can't describe how wonderful it feels to finally own my own place. I feel like the little bit of the jigsaw missing has finally been filled.

What the hell has this got to do with this thread?

Some people just can't help talking about themselves can they.

I believe they were pointing out how much renting sucks (which I agree with actually). Maybe not succintly enough though ;)

fimonkey, my opinion would be; don't burn your bridges, sure this may not be the best time for you to get onto the ladder, but why don't you save a proportion of the money (say half) and keep it in a high interest account until one day you may change your mind and/or the market may change
