So you think because you earn £30K per year you deserve what you want?

You arent even buying with a partner to boost your income amount.

Go and throw your money away on a luxury holiday. When you come back things will only get worse. In a few years time your £30K per year will only mange to rent that 1 bed grotty place let alone buy it.

Are you jealous? You certainly sound it
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

    Fimonkey,

Why don't you just spend 5K on a cracking holiday and invest the other 25K?

This is a once in a life time opportunity your Mother has left you; don't go and waste it in the exhuberance of youth.

In a few years time you may meet a woman (or a bloke?) and want to settle down and start a family and you just may wish you hadn't frittered all that cash away on doner kebabs and lager.

Just a thought, mate, from someone a bit older than yourself, who has enjoyed life too much too.

    Regards.

    Fimonkey,

I'm not going to join in the debate about what you should or shouldn't do - that is entirely up to you and I agree you should do what makes you happy.

However, have you considered what will make you happy long term and not just for the next year or so?

I'm only asking (and don't want a reply) as I wonder whether the recent loss of your mother has had an impact on your judgement and whether you will later regret your actions?

You view - "life is too short" would seem to me to be a natural response to the loss of a loved one and there are posts on the DFW board from people who have got into debt following tragic events etc.

Therefore - is your urge to spend out of character - were you always planning to buy a house? If so I would say way not wait a few months and then see how you feel?

I'm not trying to put a damper on your plans - by all means go on a trip of a lifetime but perhaps hold off spending all of it until the dust has settled and you have had time to adjust?

Apologies if I am way off the mark

    Just a thought:

You want a big fat holiday but it's not wise to blow all your inheritence - go to SE Asia. Burma, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam etc. Pretty safe (safer than Hackney anyway) and five grand would see you having a blinding time for 6 months give or take. See what you feel like after that.

My father died in March (after an 8 year illness) so I think I've got a bit of insight into how you feel. Indulge yourself a bit if that's what you want to do but don't blow the lot on a whim is my advice.

It's a shame you're not an entrepreneurial person. I could think of lots of ways to invest 30k other than in the housing market.

Most self-made millionaires live well below their means and have a very frugal mindset - and this is part of the reason they became so rich. To simply blow 25k in a hedonistic fashion doesn't make any sense at all to me. It's of course your choice and I completely understand your frustration. However, have you thought about spending 5k on your dream holiday (which it sounds like you need!) and investing the 25k in a combination of ISA, savings account and stocks / bonds?

Come back from hol refreshed, forget about the housing market all together and rent. Then, when the housing market crashes. And it will. Sooner rather than later... You would be in a very strong position to make an absolute killing (if that is your goal of course). The housing market is cyclical. It rises for a period of time, it then goes over the peak and falls for a period of time, ad infinitum. It may not seem that way as a FTB'er. It sometimes seems that prices will rise forever but believe me, they wont. When HPI exceeds salary growth (which it does now), there comes a point where it collapses because it is unsustainable. In my opinion we are at that tipping point now (check out last months land registry figures - drops in many areas already). Money lenders and estate agents will spout utter sh** until they are blue in the face. It is their job! They have to put a positive spin on the state of the market as their business depends on it.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do, but make sure you think about it very carefully. Enjoy the holiday. ;)

Good luck to the suckers who intend to continue to work their assess off to afford a leasehold cupboard! Ha ha, skit! and no sympathy whatsoever from me IF there's a house market crash (I personally don't think there will be, but I'll be laughing the loudest if there is)!!

Meanwhile I'm taking my deposit and booking myself a damn good luxury holiday.

Don't forget to pay your rent before you leave. I worked my backside off to affordable a grotty leashold cupboard, and am now mortgage free with a cupboard full of equity (over 200k). Rather than post bitter messages on a forum, why don't you do something about your problem? Be realistic. Who the hell can afford their ideal property straight away? No one.
  • No need for you to go on holiday if you live in sunny Bournemouth :p

Joking aside you could always move inland a little and pick up a nice two bed semi for around £130k mark which should get you on the ladder with your salary.

If there was several thousand people dumping 25k into the economy just like this, what would be the effect on inflation I wonder??
