    Anti renters always rattle on about paying rent is like throwing money away. But what's the difference between paying £6K in rent a year or paying £6K a year in mortgage interest on a £100K mortgage @ 6% (if you can get 6% these days). Plus the fact that when you own you have to pay buildings insurance, repairs, mortgage application fee every time you remortgage etc etc.

    The money you save on that by renting you can put into some other investment, and by renting you can avoid tying up your capital.

    Whereas with renting you have to pay moving fees, application fees (references etc) and trust them to give you ANY of your deposit back each 12mths when they tell you to move on! (assuming LL isnt repossessed a few weeks after you move in)

    Not to mention some of the time you'll be living in places where the toilet breaks down and dont get fixed for weeks, the boiler isnt serviced and breaks down every other week and/or the electrics are shot.

    Renting isnt dead money but its also not this rosy garden of eden that 'anti-house buyers' want to make it out to be. Did it for 10yrs and hope I never have to do it again! (I had 2 good places in that time and sadly couldnt stay at either for long. the rest were just nightmares)

    there are plenty of people on these boards who own thier own houses but cannot afford to do the maintainence required on them due to rising interest rates and costs elsewhere dont forget!
    :beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
    Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...

    Granted ;) And like I said renting isnt dead money, and it does suit some people. I have a problem with renting being spoken about as the 'new heaven'. All you have to do is look at the last few pages of these forums to see some of the problems renters face.

    Some guy erecting big gates in front of their estate and charging them access. An estate agent where suddenly your deposit cash became counterfeit. Your LL stealing part of your garden and giving it away to all and sundry. Thats just the recent stuff I read (dont read many renting threads) :rotfl:

    There's ways round any fee.
    Moving: rent your own van, that's what I do and its cheap;
    App fees: don't go through an agent, respond to classifieds;
    Breakdowns: Fair point but at least you don't have to pay for them yourself. And if you have a good look round the place you are planning to rent and you can see it's been nicely done up with decent appliances, you should avoid these probs.

    Sorry for my little outburst! This thread is not about me, interesting thread though! Just a little sensitive at times! Need to get a grip!

    FTR it isn't just the council, I have been saving from the age of 18 and managed to save £10,000 myself, so obviously I'll be gutted if it all goes wrong and we end up in negative equity as I've saved so hard and really want it to all work out.

    Like I said, best of luck to all, including OP.

    p.s - That's me on the av, thanks for the compliment. :D

    So you think because you earn £30K per year you deserve what you want?

    You arent even buying with a partner to boost your income amount.

    Go and throw your money away on a luxury holiday. When you come back things will only get worse. In a few years time your £30K per year will only mange to rent that 1 bed grotty place let alone buy it.

    Of course they will and further in the future a 1 bed flat will cost 5 million - nobody will be able to buy them, and all FTBs will be living in tents. Whoever believes that these prices can only ever go up has not learnt anything from how markets go up and markets go down. They always have and they always will.

    Personally I'm saving hard and will only buy when the market calms down and I can get a reasonable deal.
