Hi all- new to this forum because of this scam (Google pointed me here too!)
Had a call from the wife whilst at work today to say that an envelope had come that wasn't addressed to either of us. She opened it as we've had bailiffs knocking due to debts owed by a previous occupant and lo and behold the same two DVDs were inside!
I recognised the name on the envelope from various solicitors documents to do with our mortgage deeds. Turns out it was addressed to the original owner of our house who must've moved out around 2008, as the people we bought the place from (not the named individual) had been living here for around five years...
Seems the scammers info is rather out of date...
    Very odd though! :D

Just had the same delivered, addressed direct to me. I thought one of my mates was having a laugh but google pointed me here. Anyone tried it in a DVD player? Can't see it hacking one, interested to see if they actually work! Lol!

Surely its the 0844?unsubscribe number that's the scam, £100 per minute??

With the amount of newbies posting, perhaps MSE are behind it, in order to boost user numbers :p
  • thank God for this forum as I too received these DVDs in the post today. I haven't bought on any of the sites mentioned and mine came addressed to my full name but no title ...glad it wasn't addressed to my hubby else I might not have believed it!
they will be going in the bin,, but very glad to hear I'm not the only one! my 9 year old grandson was standing next to me when I opened it so I hurriedly covered them up.:o
  • And another one sent here. Straight in the bin I think.
    haway the lads!
  • When I have to use my real name, and can't use an alias, I use slightly different versions of my name and address for different site types. The one that I have had these disks sent to is the one I use for insurance comparison sites. So, my question is, is one of these selling on details, or is it one of the companies that quote on them? Like others on the list, I am ex directory and on opt out elec. roll

Social worker friend of mine advised today that they were warned about a mass protest going on today by a hacktivist group called "anonymous" against new Government legislation re online !!!!!!. Perhaps related?

Very interesting, I bought myself a Clio Williams as a toy just over 2 weeks ago and had to insure it. I used compare the market, tesco compare, and I think money supermarket. Is there a link here!?
  • Thank goodness for this forum. I too have received these DVD's in the post today. I've been worried and was going to go to the police but judging by their responses to other posters it seems it's a waste of time.
I can only hope that someone with the knowhow can take the info from this thread and find the thoughtless idiots that posted this completely unsolicited and embarassing mail.
  • Husband received these this afternoon and had to peel me off the ceiling before searching on the return address and showing me that google had directed him to MSE.com (like other recipients, he also thought it was a prank).

Thanks to "NigelBrooks" (posts 59 and 60) - hopefully the Met Police will look at this forum to see how widespread this is (we're on the south coast in Hampshire). I would like to see two things happen: the culprit identified, caught and prosecuted for breaching the OPA 1959, and Royal Mail ordered to cease their delivery contract with this organisation - they simply can't deny their part in perputating this offensive exercise now that they're aware of it.

By the way, if the number above my husband's name on the envelope is his unique identifier on their mailing list then these pond-life have only sent out a few hundred of these today, but has anyone got a 4-digit, or even higher, number? (Would give us an idea of the scale of their disgusting operation.)
