I'm sneaking up on you two...hopefully now I have stopwatch I'll be able to post good 10K times sometime this week or next
You're already there, there's no sneaking up!
Its only the seconds we're talking about with your times, so we all know you're in the 45 minute ish area - which is mighty impressive for someone who started running in June!:D:D:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi everyone, including newbies.
My legs are feeling more normal today and my body is operating as it should.
I had a bad cold just before arriving in Jamaica so my final LSR of 10 miles didn't happen. I managed 4.91 miles on the Monday, speedwork on the Tuesday then 4 miles last Friday.
Someone on another board had suggested taking Immodium beforehand so there would be no bowel problems, and I have to say that was a good suggestion. I might have taken a little too much though as my body took almost 2 days to 'right' itself  . Anyway, the morning of the race I woke up at 2.30 and got dressed and, along with my brother, got on a shuttle bus to the start. It was a little strange in that all the races I've done there was always been a large crowd gathered with an hour to go, however here it was more like half an hour before the start is when people started arriving.
Overall, it wasn't a big crowd and I think most people did the 10k and the half - probably very wise too. My overall pace was slower than I'd planned as I did the first half with a buddy who was only doing the half marathon. The music along the route was great and, because I had my Cambelbak and jelly babies, I managed to get to 20 miles before drinking Gatorade. The route was a good one as it is on the coast road out and back. Starting at 5.15am was an odd one but it all added to the excitement.
There weren't many spectators along the route but the volunteers were fab and there were plenty of help if you needed it.
Even though my training programme was geared towards a 4.30 time, I thought it best to allow 5 hours because of the heat. Finishing in 4:44 was better than I'd hoped for but a small part of me did wonder if I couldn't have done it in 4:30.
No matter, the medal is the prettiest I've ever seen and I now want the other two. I'll be back in 2 years' time to compete but I'd like to do both the 10k and the half at the same event - a moneysaving gesture to reduce airfare costs:rotfl:
I forgot to add I met some really lovely local runners. One aged 63 who only started running 5 years ago and has knocked up a large number of marathons. A gentleman of 81 who's competed in every Reggae Marathon since the beginning and who is a regular cyclist. My inspirations for sure.
This is one event I thoroughly recommend. Just ensure you've done some warm weather training!!:T
When I get back the UK I'll have to plan another marathon and work on my speed. I so love running!!!!The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -
What a great experience, Poorbabe!
More to the point, to come out of a marathon saying that you just love running means you are hooked for life for sure!!!:D:D
Most people utter the words 'Never Again' shortly after their first marathon, only to change their mind once the realisation of the achievement overtakes the memory of the effort!! But you seem to have gone straight to the realisation of the achievement. Excellent!:D
What was the post race binge? Red Stripe and Jerk chicken, perhaps?:p
There's hope for me yet with the inspirational characters you managed to bump into!:p
Fantastic effort! I take it that you're now thoroughly enjoying the remainder of your hols. When do you come back?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Guess i'll start the list

Mon 8th Dec - Day of rest
Tues 9th Dec -
The list now becomes..
Sun 7th Dec - Skegness 5k fun run in 22m 53s.
Mon 8th Dec - Day of rest
Tues 9th Dec - 3.1 mile run just under 30mins (non-stop)
I took someones advice and went for a non-stop medium pace jog with the ice on the pavements, i reached my turning point to come home and i felt like walking to cross the dual-carriageway, so i convinced myself ill carry on to the pub, reached the pub, then the roundabout, though on the way to the church i tripped on a raised kerb, was sure i broke a toe, but pressed on and pain went away. Managed to reach 800m from home and thought may well carry on.
Only bad thing is i developed a stitch on the way back, was down the right side, so ran with arm in the air for a bit. Did not time myself, but was dressed funny, had long johns, thin tracksuit bottoms, aircrew norweigan top and old jumper with wooly hat. Cut a hole in the armpit to wire ipod through from arm to prevent cable movement and annoying.
Bad news now is that legs are rock solid, just did a few gentle stretches with a 5min walk around the close with people looking funny at me. Wont be able to walk tomorrow, but hey next run is thursday.
I used mapmyrun.com to work out the route, must mean the other 5k isnt 5k or ive run really slow today as no one to head for.0 -
Hi everyone, I haven't posted for a while but I haven't given up, I'm still here. Last week turned out to be a write-off for me as far as running goes. After my 4-mile Monday run I didn't get out at all
. I know, shame on me!
The weather didn't help as we had snow on Tuesday and it froze overnight, leaving pavements treacherous for pedestrians.
Its completely true what other posters have said; getting out of the running routine is terrible and its then much more difficult to get back into it. Thoughts of "Oh, I've not run for so long it really isn't worth it now..." go through your brain instead of "I'm really looking forward to my run later today".
Anyway, yesterday I returned to the track for my interval session. I did 4 x 800m and was absolutely amazed to find that I have yet again speeded up! 3:51, 3:50, 3:50, 3:56 - Avg 3:52! I had to force myself to go and I really wasn't looking forward to it. I really thought that the week off would have been a backward step but I am thrilled to see that it may actually have been just what I needed. Anyway, I'm now back to my routine and looking forward to tomorrow's run.

Morning All
Well done on your run Alias - thats a great time for 3.1 miles!
Thanks for the full report Poor - sounds exciting - I hope you have a great holiday now - can you post a piccie of your medal when you get back - I'd love to see it
Wow Chick thats some good running - sometimes you need a rest for a week to let your body catch up with itself and sometimes I do my best times when I have to force myself out there.
did and easy 10k this morning with (drumroll please) - a proper stopwatch and my time was 49.20 on pulse 100...I can feel that 45 mins inching closer again - I was a bit stiff today from intervals so never quite got into my stride but still I'm pretty chuffed with that time
Happy running everyone0 -
alias - fab times!! Welcome aboard!
poorbabe - thank you for the report, and yes, a photo of the medal would be good! Well done!
chickadee - you are doing soooooo well! Your week of rest seems to have done you some good rather than harm!
beckywithanewstopwatchandnothingisstoppinghernow - I will always be in awe of you and these superb early morning times!
Still no running for me - I am determined to recover properly rather than push to hard too early.
I have, however, been to weightwatchers throughout my "re-introduction to running" and have lost 8lbs which is a steady 1lb a week. Now down to 10 stone 11, so still a good amount to go, but I am happy with that progress, which is all down to the running because despite going to weightwatchers, I don't exactly track what I eat........:o

Wow hypno thats a great weight loss!!!
I have to say I didnt take up running to lose weight and I've been stuffing my face but I still lost a stone and a half since June - its totally mad. The only problem is now I have to keep running so I dont put any back on0
