And since we now seem to have some self-confessed data anoraks, it seems worth posting again.

Well, well, well...am I buzzing? Several things are coming together at the same time. Yesterdays interval session was the best yet, following 7:27 and 7:06 averages in previous sessions 6:56 was another nice chunk of progress. Very similar to Chickadee's progress I might add doing similar work.

But following that with a sub 50 min 10K was a surprise to say the least (Previous best 52:30). 49:56 is enough to worry Idiophreak that a fat, old man could actually catch him if he doesn't find another gear!:p Btw Idio, with the standard of football you displayed last night you might be getting a call up for Huddersfield Town!

So, the next target is the first race in over 3 years on Saturday - The Leeds Hyde Park 5K with an aim of dipping under 23:20....I cant wait!

Fantastic Rich, well done. But to sneak in a sub-50 10k without even trying, Not fair!!! ;)

Did my easy 4-miler tonight. I really enjoyed it, you know when you get that feeling of being really free and that you are flying over the ground, not running, well it was like that. 4.25 miles 38:22. That takes me to just over 9 min miles, and I know I can go faster. That sub-50 10k is in my sights.

(As for being a data anorak, I have added a couple of columns to my running spreadsheet to show the mins per mile for each training run. Over the last three weeks, my mins per mile for the same route have been 10:06, 9:20, 9:03. ...running and stats - can't beat it.....

chickadee that is fantabulous :T You will be sub 50 for that 10k before you know it!

I have, happily, finally seen some of the "side effects" of the running - 3lbs lost this week making a total of 6.5lbs in the 5 weeks since I started.

Hey Hypno, that's just brilliant. :T You see, all of that pounding the streets has paid off! And as well as there being less of you, what remains is getting fitter. ;)

Still a fair bit to lose, but I was happy when I stood on the scales this morning - mind you, with 18.5 miles done in 3 days, I should bloomin well hope so too!!!!

I was saying to P earlier this evening (when I was talking too much and preventing her from going out for a run!) that I am sure I am not only running further for "everyday" runs than I used to (when I was running regularly in the early 90s) but I am also enjoying it more than I expected.

When I ran before, I could "easily" do 3 or 5 miles, and would bash out a half marathon every few months at 10 min mile pace, but I certainly don't think I did regular training runs of 6 miles plus, and I wouldn't have done 8 or 9 miles this far ahead of a race.

So, I must be a) far better prepared and b) enjoying it!

Well that's exactly what I'm finding too. The more I run, the more I enjoy it and the more I want to run! I suppose that's why we get addicted. :D

You really have ramped up the mileage haven't you? That 18.5 in 3 days is some going. Well done you. :T

  • Chickadee - you've hit the nail on the head there re stats. Runs can feel very similar week to week and if they weren't timed and pulses taken you might not even know you were improving. That description of how it felt today though is what makes it all worth it, isn't it?

What you're seeing is that as the interval paces improve, it has an effect on ALL distances and equivalent efforts become faster. You're almost like a text book example of how to train for a specific target - aint it great?:D

Hypno - That is a great summary: Better prepared, enjoying more and weight moving towards ideal weight slowly but surely. You don't need external motivation when you can feel those effects.

Talking of weight loss, I've had another check tonight and am weighing in at 12stone. That means 40lbs lighter than 12 weeks ago. It seems to be still continuing on a straight line reduction of about 3lbs per week whereas I would have expected it to have started to tail off now. Ah well, it will soon or else I'll overshoot......:p

40lbs is some going! I am sure it will find it's right level, but trust that you will notice should you need to up your calorie intake to offset additional exercise to stop the weight dropping too far.
