but I think It may be time to just be a lurker again, your all doing so well and peeps like me who only have the odd two hrs off if their lucky, so can't make def comittements to run/post all the time, can be left on the wayside a bit. Most of my posts seem to go un noticed now that I can't be on here so much, so I will bow out gracefully and continue anyway.
Good luck all

by the same token noone should apologise for being fleet footed and making good progress, some people are naturally built for running and will find it relatively easy and progress... others, like me will persevere and improvements will be less.....
Some of us have others to care for which eats into our time, and others are foot loose and fancy free so can afford to be "selfish" and devote loads of time to it.
We all do what we can when we can and noone should feel that what they do isn't worth reporting in on......!!!
Stick around babes... i for one will miss the nonsense you talk!! Report back after Oz, and see you soon.... if you don't pop in, i will come to night owls and hunt you down!!!

Everybody is capable of progressing in ways they would never have thought possible by taking things logically and slowly. The most debilitating physical attribute is excess weight, not the way people are 'naturally built'. And in that respect, weight should be shed through walking, not running, at least until the excess weight is no more than two stones.
There is no need for the 'no pain, no gain' attitude of the 1980s, getting fit is appropriate for everyone and should be immensely enjoyable, which it is if the appropriate activity is done for the right circumstances.
It is very difficult not to progress by taking small regular steps towards fitness. Trying to literally 'run before you can walk' is the most likely way to discourage new participants.
The idea that to get fit and make good progress requires selfishness and loads of time couldn't be more wrong. Sorry Maz!
Runners get far more organised as they get fitter, they are able to organise day to day activities, as well as running activities, far more efficiently than before they were fit. Generally speaking, even 'heavy' workloads only require about an hour a day, which can be carried out at any time to fit around other committments. The fitter runners get, the less 'faffing' is involved and the job just gets done. I must make special note of Poorbabe here who yesterday, without any fuss or fanfare, went out and achieved a 20 mile run,a feat she never thought even possible a while back.
As routines get more efficient runners generally find they have more time available than previously due to the reduction of the many 'time wasters'.
It is nothing about being 'selfish' or 'devoting loads of time'. Everyone has the capability and the time resources to progress to whatever level they set their mind to.
Guys - i know we are trying to draw a veil over this, but i feel i have to respond just the once for my side.... see sequence of posts above..... and maybe you can see why i was upset.... i make no secret of my weight, and i know that it is a major factor in my lack of progress but i generally don't moan about it... i keep my head up and try to get on with it.... however nowhere in HWGA's posts or my response to her did anyone actually say anything about excess weight... and to bring it in just hit a nerve, and was in no way relevent to the reasons why HWGA felt she couldn't contribute to the thread... and my response to ask her to stay...
i think there is no danger of a newbie coming on and be put off by someone saying "oooh be careful, you might not have natural ability" as so few people find the first run easy.
i think there is no danger anyone with serious carer commitments could come on the thread and walk away when they see HWGA, Sal, Snags, Evab, mummum2, poorbabe, chickadee, Hypnno et al managing a busy family/work life balance. These stories are a big part in motivating me day to day...
i think they are more likely to be put off by someone saying "well you can try to run, and you'll only get so far but until you lose 4 stone, you're wasting your time"
And that is it, in a nutshell it's insensitive and untrue. Okay i know i ain't no Paula but i am doing it.... and if i can anyone can......
As for quoting me, I don't mind - i was upset and i went to friends to feel better, how they react is up to them and they did make me feel better. And everyone calls Rich the font of all knowledge anyway, so i stand by that and i have challenged him on the run/walk thing before so i stand by that too.....
However i am sorry if it upset/angered you rich.
Sorry for any offence caused to the others, and i'm not being theatrical but i really don't feel the love here anymore so am bowing out... of course i'll continue to run, afterall i've signed up for Leeds and have hotel booked n everything.
You guys are ace, and everyone has something to offer, so keep up the good work!!!!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
Your times will soon pick up Snaggles - a few weeks ago I couldn't run further than the end of my road, and our mile times were much more than 11 mins a mile!
Maz, don't bow out - please. Stick around.Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Hey Poor,
What a great run! Wow you must be getting so excited now - gosh is it two weeks now??
Are you feeling good for the target time?
Becky
Hi Becky, this is my first time here since my last post. Not sure I'm confident of making my RW target of 4:30, given the hot weather over that side, but I am aiming to cross the finish line before they open the roads 7 hrs after start time :rotfl: :rotfl: . Anything earlier is a bonus
Not feeling excited just yet but that will start early next week, once I've started pulling my running gear together and wondering if I can get them, plus a change of clothing, plus vital toiletries into my small carry-on
Must remember to get blister plasters and another pair of running socks, plus some more jelly babies..................The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -

Hey Poor - I reckon you will do if you pull out runs that like that last 20 miler! Nerves only at the moment then - well I'm getting excited for you...when you get back first thing you must do is come and tell us your time :j:j
LOL soo much to pack so little time by the sounds of it! I cant go anywhere even for a few days without a weeks worth of stuff now - they should make fold up trainers for travelling with!
Happy Running!0 -

My 10k in December is all over sand, through streams etc - can't decide if I should look at getting some "grippier" shoes for this kinda thing?
Hi Idio, not read all the posts so not sure if this has already been responded to. It's definitely advisable to get another pair of shoes. Trail shoes might be best but have a chat with the shop staff and they'll sort you out I'm sureThe 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -

Rich wasn't saying *anything like* that, though.
He was simply rejecting the idea of anyone being "naturally build" for running (or not, to the point)...Which just isn't, really, a thing. I really don't think anyone out there (excluding those with disabilities, etc, obviously) is "predesigned" by genetics, astrology, hoodoo voodoo or anything else not to be able to run.
I think, to be honest, his problem was being a little *too* delicate with what he was saying....So I'll try a blunter approach.
People *aren't*, naturally, built to be overweight.
Therefore, what I think Rich was getting at is the idea that
"natural build" isn't really a factor in running, whereas "build" certainly is...
The difference being, if you say to someone that they're *fundamentally* never going to be a good runner, because it's the way they were "naturally built" - they're not going to do it. What's the point. If, however, you tell them everyone starts off on a (more or less) level footing and it's *you* that determines what your body looks like, how it behaves etc - that's 100x more motivating. People see that the performance of their body is in *their hands*.
A lot of people across these boards have BMIs (and bodies for that matter) that I can only dream of...But I really don't see that being an accident on their part. They work extremely hard to maintain their weight and I find that extremely inspirational/aspirational. To explain it away as their "natural build" is to cheapen their efforts somewhat and is far more insulting, I think, than suggesting running's easier when carrying less weight (which, believe me, is certainly the case).
Finally, my rant aside, back to the point - have you ever seen Rich *ever* saying *anything* suggesting there's anyone out there that *can't* run, is wasting their time, etc. He's been nothing but helpful to those of all abilities, so I don't see why you need to, apparently, jump to these assumptions and think the worst of him.0 -
Hi everyone,
Is it safe to come back in now? Sorry to see that people seem to have taken offence at some of the advice given on here recently. Personally I have only gained from the discussions we have had on this thread and I'm saddened to see that others have not. Don't forget, we all have our own opinions, and as in all activities, sports, etc. there are different schools of thought. Not every football manager runs his club the same way and they all have varying degrees of success. Its the same here. We're not all running marathons. My goal of a sub-50min 10k is only a personal goal, nothing more. I like having a goal as it gives my training some purpose, but if I never achieve it, at least I have stayed fitter whilst trying!
Anyway, I did my track session last night. 4 x 800m. The rain was torrential and as I was doing laps, in one direction the wind was behind me, in the other direction I was blown and buffetted! Had to take my glasses off as with the rain and steaming up I couldn't see a thing! Still managed to do a 3:58 average (3:53, 4:00, 3:59; 4:02) so I was happy with that, given the conditions. Typically, it is a lovely day here today and I'm tempted to have a run out again tonight if the weather stays fair.
Happy running everyone, whether your goal is a mile or a marathon!
Chicka, if it's doing the same thing my way tonight can I call you to sub for me?I don't wanna get rain wet this time of year :rotfl: :rotfl:

Hey a colleague of mine died on Friday, she was in her mid-30s so makes me realise how lucky I am to be able to get out running and I tell you what my run tonight will be spurred on by her and the thought that this arguing is not going to make anyone feel better.
That's my final answer on that topic, back to the running. xx0 -
Tonight I'm going for 4 miles need to stretch my legs and get on with building up the miles, I'll do hill work during the week in the dark
