tis my shoulders for me... I tend to tense them, especially if i am running a fast run or towards the end of a long run, leaves me with achey bits for quite some time!!! going to get a run in today if it kills me!

On the subject of shoes...does anyone have different pairs for road running and cross country?

My 10k in December is all over sand, through streams etc - can't decide if I should look at getting some "grippier" shoes for this kinda thing?

I wear mens trainers 1/2 a size bigger than my foot size so there's a good width for me, I'm size 7 so quite big for a ladeee. They're saucony and have been brilliant for me.

  • Wow, is it safe to speak in here anymore? Who stole the sanity?

It takes quite a bit to get me annoyed, but I can honestly say I am stunned by the activities on this plus another thread yesterday.

Lets just recap (yes folks probably best to get your heads down as some people seem intent on taking offence for no reason!!):

It seems that its okay to dismiss people's very commendable efforts as being due to 'being selfish and due to having loads of time available' and due to having 'natural ability'. It isn't - everyone's efforts are equally praiseworthy and just because you're not a member of a clique on another thread doesn't mean you should be dismissed as having it easy.

So the specific points were addressed, namely:

    1. New starters should not be led to believe that if they're struggling, due to lack of 'natural ability' they will never able to achieve anything much.

As was pointed out, and later reemphasised by another poster as the point seemed to have been deliberately missed, natural ability is a very small factor in someone's potential until they reach a very high level. Instead of feeling confined to permanent non-achievement it was pointed out that a far bigger factor than natural ability is weight, and that at the right weight pretty much anybody can reach a decent standard - if they so please.

Now somehow a positive helpful comment has miraculously been turned into something completely different. I can only assume some people actually try to take offence.

    2. There was a clear suggestion that to reach any kind of decent fitness level, besides being selfish you had to have 'loads of time available'.

Again, why the need to put new starters off like this? If you don't have loads of spare time you'll never get fit? Lets have a look at this - there are 168 hours in a week, a 'heavy' workload takes 7 hours.A pretty decent level of fitness, certainly a good 10K standard, could be achieved on 2 hours. 2 out of 168! Instead of letting people be put off if they didn't have 'loads of time available' it was pointed out that when you get into a routine and set your mind to it, in a difficult crossword clue type of way, bits of time make themselves available in ways you may never have previously thought.

Simple things like walking 30 minutes instead of taking a 15 minute bus ride means a 30 min walk cost 15 minutes. Instead of spending time getting ready to go for a run with all that entails, just getting out of the door and walking, which is a far more beneficial exercise for new starters, can lead to 20 minutes more being available for a walk than would have been for a run.

Now again, what was a positive helpful comment has been turned into something completely different.

I am bemused and quite frankly stunned that people don't want to debate points, but would rather take offence where offence doesn't exist and then go on to launch snide personal attacks (see next post for a flavour of what went on on another thread, simply as a result of the above points!!).

I don't know about anyone else, but the only reason for being on this thread is to enjoy the pleasures of getting fit and helping and advising others to do the same.

But right now I feel like I've been kicked in the stomach and trampled all over. I can honestly say I have never experienced a situation of such unprovoked sarcasm and direct attacks.

As an aside i had a really good session this morning, but I feel there's no point in posting details. I may post a weekly summary on Sunday if the nonsense has gone away. Otherwise, I'll just say it was fun, or at least it was fun until yesterday!

So good luck with all your goals. It is an enjoyable activity so don't let anyone belittle your efforts at whatever level you wish to participate.

  • can i hide in here.... am having shakey rage moment... in fact i may cry....

why are people in this flecking place so pompous!!!

Be nice to me DFW's... i need a hug! Maz

    What have the !!!!!! done/said? Lucifa73

Some people are just gits. Pepe

just a disagreement with someone who knows all there is to know about everything it would seem, i should know better.... and i'm not going to go slagging them off here cause they are only next door...... and i am fat, so really i shouldn't have an opinion about anything anyway...!!

And who says that THIN women are better anyway! Pepe

Maz-DO NOT GO ALL VICTIM ON ME! GO GET 'EM! Bunny

OI!!!! Who has upset my mate Maz.......how very dare they......let me at em... Sammy

Some people think that if something is 'factual' then it can be said freely with no regard for the feelings of others. Snaggles

I don't post on the running thread because I find it cliquey (sorry, just being honest like!) but I would like to say that there is a lovely lovely woman on the Runner's World forums who would tell you that she is very overweight, and she does marathons, and super marathons, about as often as I have a bath. She is fab and a real inspiration Daphne Descends

Me too, as a fat bird who would love to run Spud30

i feel like i don't want to post there (next door) anymore and it upsets me cause it was the only place really that i went, apart from daily chat (and manc/leeds new threads) Maz

As well, I will not revisit the DFW thread as anyone that upsets my friends are not people I want to be around-I have Sammy, Maz, IA and Snags that (and Sally!) run and post on here so that is all I need. I don't need that thread to keep me motivated. Bunny

ooooh run/walk is the devil according to the runners therad font of all knowledge! Maz

Yes, I meant the running thread. Dont need it. Bunny

if i wasn't run/walk at the start i wouldn't ever have begun...... and that's what my runclub advocates.. how can the whole of the running fraternity, every website i've ever looked on, every book i've ever read, be wrong and one person be right..... Maz

Well, me being a rebel like wot I am..........might just run/walk on purpose coz peeps say I'm not s'posed to Spud30

but it's some peoples opinion that running then walking is bad as it allows warmed up muscles to cool in between and are more liable to damage..... Maz

rich, can't we just let it go now. you have an extremely valuable contribution to make to this thread, as do newbies who come along too. I do not see the benefit of your above post and quoting all the responses made.

let it go, lets go back to how we were, with a fun nice supportive community here.
