One question I do have is that if I only had 1 hour a week and was overweight could you ever progress into a fast runner? Surely there comes a point where this time is not enough and I think that is the point that some peeps have been trying to make. Yes we can all get out there for x amount of time but some of us realise that due to the time we have available we will never be up there doing those fast min miles

Just my spin on an answer to this hypothetical.

Assume the worst case...this one hour is just one block...can't be split up, just one hour once a week. Person's overweight.

    Goal: Be a faster runner.

Now, there are two things that are gonna help this person reach their goal

    1) Losing weight
    2) Running

Start with the second one...If you just run for an hour, once a week, you WILL get faster at it. You're never gonna break world records, but you'll get a lot faster over time.

The first one's harder. With only one exercise session per week, you'd find it hard to create the same kind of calorie deficit most people on these threads use to lose weight...*through "exercise" alone. So, you're going to have to do two things: 1) Take really strict control of your diet and 2) Burn as many calories as you can throughout the day - going upstairs? Run up them. Cleaning the bathroom? Give it some welly, get your lungs working. Taking the bin bag out? Do some bicep curls with it on the way. Losing weight needn't take much "extra" time, it just takes a lot of determination and drive to get it done. If you have that, time becomes less of a limiting factor...

Now, as I said, that's worst case. If the 1 hour could be split into 2 30 min blocks some weeks, 3 20s others, a single 1 hour some weeks...you could make serious progress...

Finally, it's important to remember that things change. May not always seem like it, but they do...You may well find yourself with more time down the road..and if you do, you'd be kicking yourself if you'd just not bothered to try with your one hour per week up til then...You've got to think of each run as an investment in yourself and your future running potential... (or something :))
  • I just had to come back on to thank all you lovely people for being so supportive, :A life is just **** sometimes. But I didn't mean to upset anyone.

People will not know what I am talking about re restrictions with my job as they are very unusual. Mr & Mrs can't be left, I have to be relieved by someone to be able to leave and the time they come is governed by the office staff that make their rota's up.
They will not let me have my 2hrs early morning or evenings, and I am constantly trying to negotiate this with my boss's, so can not join any clubs which makes me    Sal, I would love to join you if this is ever allowed hon.
I have other professionals in and out all the time and I have to be here to let them in or pass in fo on to them.

I have been walking regularly since Feb and am now very fast but still can't run more than 30sec cos I can't breath, which is probably, all in my head:mad:

We all have ways of explaining things which may or may not come out the wrong way! but I do not believe that anyone on here ever says things to be mean to any one, put anyone down, or to put newbies off. I do not say these things re my circumstances, for sympathy, or even to moan (well, not all the time:o ) but so people will understand that it is not the way I would like it but the way it is.

So come on you great bunch continue in the way you do, enjoy the things you can, as I will when I am not so tied, and until then I will get out there and feel   sometimes when I can't, after all we are all human aren't we.

Well, what started as a short thank you seems to have ended as nearly a book, and probably sounds very mixed up, but there you go that's me init:cool:

Ok. Not to sure how to phrase this but I shall give it a good shot.

I am stunned and amazed at some of the things that I have read both here and on other threads this evening. I have read of some people not posting here because it feels "cliquey"
I have read of some people not posting here because it feels "elitest"
And the discussion that took place this afternoon was somewhat disconcerting in its nature, especially as some of the posters do not wish now to return to this thread.

I started this thread as a distraction for people to their debt issues. To give people a focus on changing other areas of their lives,
Be it fat thin young or old with a natural ability or the ability to only run 100 yards with time for 6 runs a week or just the one, a place to chat with like minded runners and to spur them on to reach their goal.

Some people on here have extremely valuable input when it comes to technical knowledge, others have extremely valuable input when it comes to spurring people on!

    BUT!!!!!!!!!!

This thread should be available for everyone, and for new people to wish to join in, for them to feel they CAN acheive a mile round the block if that is their biggest aspiration. To feel they can take half an hour away from "the real world" however often they are possibly able to and be welcome here.

I thank you ALL for your input on this thread, but c'mon guys, lets get it back to the reason it was started and not allow people to feel they can't post here.

Hope that came across as it was intended to.

It most certainly did pania, well done for your thoughts and reasoning. Let's hope everything settles down now and we get back to the reason we're all here.

I had another 6 mile and very brisk walk this afternoon, and,as is usual for me these days, ended it with a 1/2 mile run and I really enjoyed it all. Got back, had a shower and felt really greaatt and so thrilled at having done it on a day I really didn't feel like it. Glad I ignored me (usually the best way ) and did myself some good! :j

HWGA - you mentioned the not being able to breathe bit....and that might be in your head.....

I am not very good at a)explaining and b) remembering but somewhere I read that the not being able to breathe bit was good for you:eek: Its that bit that makes your lungs stronger. Perhaps you could do 30 seconds and then walk for a couple of mins then another 30 seconds and then walk a couple of mins.....I started out running for a minute when I started and even then I thought my lungs were going to blow up....

Sally XX - I knew you was hypothetically speaking but again I found it hard to put into words what I wanted to say, but wanted to say something:rotfl:

    Morning all,

Did my 4.3 mile fartlek this morning 38 mins so not bad but I know worked it hard because I had to lie down when I got back (endorphin rush anyone?) - mostly because I did the first two miles in about 15 mins!

Right off to have a shower now...I'm still not sure whats going on around here...

Well done on the walks Sue and HWGA!

Thanks Hypno! Yeah I havent felt that ill from running in a while - one of those sessions where your body is letting you know you're working it hard, but they are quite satisfying nonetheless :D

Hope you get out tonight - although your Sunday long run might catch up with you today...
