when I first posted here I was very much a beginner having only started a month or two previously and having all these experienced runners around was so inspiring and filled me with confidence about both the advice they gave and the progress I could make. Guess I'm trying to say thanks for all the support guys - oh look at me got a cold and gone all mushy!

Just to second this wholeheartedly (aside from the misquote aspect, obv ;)) - I still consider myself to be very much a beginner, but doubt I'd have come as far as I have without the support of this thread...you're all legends :D

We really need to probe this...he's talking "natural process", "training effect" and so on...I'm thinking it's more like "jacked up on crazy beans" or "misc voodoo/black magic"....the only logical explanations.

You could be right - dark chocolate is definitely my fave.:p

  • morning all - HWGA please don't go... i mostly post on here purely for my own benefit and loads of my posts go unnoticed too, so please don't feel left out.... your warmth and lovely personality is a valued addition to the thread and as i said before, it needs peeps like you, SueUU, n me to make walking or running a little seem worthwhile......

by the same token noone should apologise for being fleet footed and making good progress, some people are naturally built for running and will find it relatively easy and progress... others, like me will persevere and improvements will be less.....

Some of us have others to care for which eats into our time, and others are foot loose and fancy free so can afford to be "selfish" and devote loads of time to it.

We all do what we can when we can and noone should feel that what they do isn't worth reporting in on......!!!

Stick around babes... i for one will miss the nonsense you talk!! Report back after Oz, and see you soon.... if you don't pop in, i will come to night owls and hunt you down!!!

  • Did my 2.5 today,
but I think It may be time to just be a lurker again, your all doing so well and peeps like me who only have the odd two hrs off if their lucky, so can't make def comittements to run/post all the time, can be left on the wayside a bit. Most of my posts seem to go un noticed now that I can't be on here so much, so I will bow out gracefully and continue anyway.
    Good luck all
    HWGA xx

(special thanks to sal and maz go guys go)

I'm just going to pinch a bit of Maz's post...

It doesn't matter how much you're doing or how much you post - am sure that everyone still wants to hear from you! I've not been posting much on here either as am feeling a bit 'stuck' with the running at the moment, but it's just like the debt free journey - there's those who can devote lots of time and energy to it, and get it paid off super quick, and those who are just ticking over keeping on top of things.

    Please don't go!

Absolutely...it's important to remember that your posts are really important to everyone on the thread...as well as helping to keep yourself motivated by posting, you help all of us as well...

Although well intentioned, these comments could, unintentionally, cause new starters to feel unintentionally pigeon holed.

Everybody is capable of progressing in ways they would never have thought possible by taking things logically and slowly. The most debilitating physical attribute is excess weight, not the way people are 'naturally built'. And in that respect, weight should be shed through walking, not running, at least until the excess weight is no more than two stones.

There is no need for the 'no pain, no gain' attitude of the 1980s, getting fit is appropriate for everyone and should be immensely enjoyable, which it is if the appropriate activity is done for the right circumstances.

It is very difficult not to progress by taking small regular steps towards fitness. Trying to literally 'run before you can walk' is the most likely way to discourage new participants.

The idea that to get fit and make good progress requires selfishness and loads of time couldn't be more wrong. Sorry Maz!

Runners get far more organised as they get fitter, they are able to organise day to day activities, as well as running activities, far more efficiently than before they were fit. Generally speaking, even 'heavy' workloads only require about an hour a day, which can be carried out at any time to fit around other committments. The fitter runners get, the less 'faffing' is involved and the job just gets done. I must make special note of Poorbabe here who yesterday, without any fuss or fanfare, went out and achieved a 20 mile run,a feat she never thought even possible a while back.

As routines get more efficient runners generally find they have more time available than previously due to the reduction of the many 'time wasters'.

It is nothing about being 'selfish' or 'devoting loads of time'. Everyone has the capability and the time resources to progress to whatever level they set their mind to.

  • I think specifically HWGA feels she can't fit it in due to being a full time carer, i was trying to say that she shouldn't feel bad because she can't devote much time to it... and should do what she can when she can and share it with us, not feel that what she does isn't worthwhile in comparison to others........

In fact as far as walking to lose weight first being the optimal thing to do, she is a good example of that and she should feel encouraged to keep reporting in her efforts for that reason too.....

Come back HWGA! This isn't supposed to be an "elite" running thread. Everyone has different targets and aims. I've been carp with the running myself recently, getting about one 4 miler a week in on top of my football, just to keep ticking over.

You shouldn't compare your progress negatively to others. Not everyone has ambitions to run a marathon.
    Running Club targets 2010
    5KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)
    10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)
    Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)
    Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)

Which touches on another point, actually...A lot of the responses have been to do with making progress....tbh, there's nothing to say you have to make progress at all...One of the main reasons you should go running is because you enjoy it. A lot of people will find that, to a point, you make progress as a side effect of just going out, but you might not - and there's nothing wrong with that...There's a lot of emphasis in this thread (understandably) on running for fitness/weight loss and running for competition...maybe not enough emphasis on running for the hell of it, because it's fun, etc...
