If you have a quick look at my diary #5653, that will answer two of your questions, ie should you count the walking miles and is 11mins any good!Oh I know so sorry for all the questions - its a bit like being at infant school again - you know the 'why' and 'what for'!! At my age if I don't get everything down in one go - I forget!! Amazes me how I manage to find my way round any field really and then to remember why and how I got there!!!!
So I actually timed my 1 mile this morning - was headwind for the first half and did it in just over 11 mins - good, bad or indifferent?!! I walk 1/2 mile there and 1/2 mile back - should that be counted in overall distance? I use that as my warm up and cool down. I have to say that if I thought i'd be able to run for over 10mins three weeks ago I would have slapped myself round the face for being so stupid!!! But hey I can!!
Mmmm Endorphins quite nice aren't they!!!!!
It would be silly if you did 5 miles of walking per week, ie 250 miles per year, and didn't expect it to improve your running. It does! It burns fat, strengthens muscles and tendons and improves elasticity of muscles.
As for the time, I'd be very surprised if you were going any faster than that, but pace is unimportant. Time each run to measure progress but not to chase the clock. Ease off and you improve more quickly.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Thanks Becky-rtw yes I could aim for 20mins, I can feel the pain now!!!
Rich ,you are soooo right I just don't get out of breath only walking even at a fast pace-so I think it isn't doing as much good!
Will look at your diary and try to work out the answers for myself!!!!!!:T
OOOOh woopeee the sorbi-thingys have arrived - so I will HAVE to run tomorrow to try them out......................:j0 -

No - I was saying the opposite!!
The walking is great for you and will help your running. In fact I'd say its essential to do more walking before more running.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

11 minute miles is fast notapenny!
i don't worry about pace but i know i'm slow, i estimate 14 minute miles for me......
so you are doing really well....
it astounds me how much progress people make so quickly, i guess mine is slower and hopefully steady...... pah!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
Right ok boss - perhaps a good walk tomorrow am and then maybe a run Thursday?
I think I tend to be a little impatient.......!!!!! As the saying goes 'dont run before you can walk'.!!0 -
Um excuse me Maz - you ran 4 miles the other day!0

i know.... but
almost but not quite 4 miles... and i walked after 20mins for 4 mins.... and it took me an hour altogether...
But still it's an achievement for me! :j
thanks hun!
I'm not really being negative, i just think it's all relative innit?I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

Hehehe That's better!
But its so true - you make much more progress more quickly if you ease off and include a lot of walking.
But most new runners are impatient and just want to get stuck in to running, so its a perfectly normal urge!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

OH laughed as I hopefully called you all running 'fellow athletes' - he doesn't feel that my little 'pootle' round the field is very spectacular. He is one of those who has been there and done that in the dim and distant past - did it better that anyone and probably still could :rotfl: !! if only he could be bothered...................!
Hey, Notapenny, we all started with a pootle round the field!
When I started runing I decided to run round the docks near to me. I got to the end and was doubled up gasping for breath. The next time I got a bit further before I was doubled over gasping for breath, but it was progress!
You will come on in leaps and bounds at first as you gain fitness. It is more difficult later to increase speed, distance, etc but deal with that when you get there. For now, carry on pootling!Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

Chickadee - I can't believe that you have ever 'pootled' you've just done the GNR!!!!!!
Maz - 4 miles in an hour that is very impressive more like 4 miles in 4 hours for me I think!! I could walk 4 miles relatively easily (dragged by the doggy) only cos I do a lot of walking- But I don't want to walk I want to RUN!!!!!
Oh I know Rich - Sorry there I go again - patience patience!!!!!10
