Thanks Maz - I know I do tend to rush at things and want to be great at them straight away.

My head is saying 'okay, just do Race for Life and get a bit fitter', but there's a bit of me that really wants to go further than that. I'm just not sure my knackered and unstable joints will take it though, so I'm trying not to get too carried away.
I think I have a reasonable level of non-exercise activity (wahey
), because I've been gradually losing weight for the last few years, but I want to be really fit and healthy for once in my life, so I need to try a bit harder. "I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -

Morning all, managed right round lovely turf field again this morning!! yipee!!! Even managed to say 'morning' to lovely fellow dog walker with greyhound (glad I haven't got one of those - no chance of keeping up!).
Still trying to get with the lingo - whats a 'fartlek'??
I would hate to drop it into a conversation and find it was no where near appropriate.............!!
You all are super keep fitties - netball, swimming, squash, spinning!!! Does dog walking, horse poo picking, carrying buckets of water count??
That Rich chappie is certainly very well versed in many things.............how does he find the time to run and post on here??
Hi Notapenny,
Well done you on the field :j
Rich will be here with a proper explanation later, but fartlek for me is running whatever distance my body can cope with at a faster than normal, then taking a short time to recover, then doing some more...I think it builds fitness by pushing your body really hard, so it gets used to this and then you should be bale to add more miles at your normal pace relatively easily...
How did I do coach?0 -
Yes Poo picking - you ought to try it!!!!!! All that bending, shoveling and pushing a bl***y great wheelbarrow round a field (whilst trying to hold your nose!) must be a good all round work out - and its never ending cos you get to one side of the field from the other and the b****rs have done some more!!!! Sometimes I have to RUN and push to beat the dog to the next heap ( I am sure you can guess why the dog would be interested mmmm yummy!)0

Listen to your body, it's actually telling you that "ouch, i am just about coping with this missus, but let's adjust to this level of activity first, then we can progress"
time is on your side snags... ! don't rush!
Says me, slowest progress ever made, i am the opposite and this is what i'm trying to address....I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

I think this must be a northern thing as as a rule us west country people are very very friendly!
It's fair to say there's regional variation, too - I did one run in south wales and I think around 1/20 people I said "mornin'!" too actually looked up from their feet...I guess some places are just friendlier than others...0 -
Maz!!! Don't knock the progress you are making - I think I find what you are doing more inspirational than anything else because I feel like we are up against similar restraints and difficulties, so if I see that you can do it, it makes me believe I can too.(Land_of)_Maz wrote: »Listen to your body, it's actually telling you that "ouch, i am just about coping with this missus, but let's adjust to this level of activity first, then we can progress"

Fartlek is a word to use when nobodys listening to a word you're saying - because it always pricks ears up for some reason!
Fart-lek is actually Swedish for 'Speed Play' ( I wonder if a Swedish coach, when shouting faster shouts 'farter' - possible!).
So, it's basically a session where you take the speed up and down instead of running at constant pace, therefore getting some faster work in to the mix.
As Becky did such a session before getting up time this morning her explanation was good! (So, Becky, you can now explain fartlek to the unitiated - you're coming on leaps and bounds
