I was just looking at the terrain view on mapmyrun
I tell you there arent any hills or even gentle inclines near where I live - argh
Obviously I don't exactly know your geography but there are suitable hills in areas like Shooter's Hill which is not far from Greenwich Park which you mentioned earlier.
It is a known problem for London runners though so the treadmill idea might not be a bad idea, even though not ideal.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi Becky, take a look at the above map. I live in Balham and am currently in training to do my first marathon in Jamaica. I sometimes do a lap of Clapham Common then onto Battersea Park, which involves going down Cedars Road, Queenstown Road and into the Park and return. The return is the hardest bit as it's an incline so you could try that. Making it to the lights on Wandsworth Road would be enough initially, then crossing and going half way up Cedars Road would be the 'extra' bit.
Alternatively you could do a left onto Broughton Road, then Silverthorne Road, up to Wandworth Road. That's hard too, but the legs (and lungs) adapt eventually.

Treadmill would require joining a gym - not very MSE after all.
Greenwich is about 45 mins on the train possibly more from me, I think Richmond is closer but thats still a good 30 mins (and a train journey in my gym kit - nice)...
Grr, I'll go away and have a think...it could be worse I used to live in Cambridge - the only hill there is a railway bridge :rotfl:0 -
I've thought of another alternative.
On Thursdays I do hills with my club at up Streatham Common, Covington Way. Very challenging it is too. With the nights drawing in, it might not be ideal but on a weekend possibly? With a treat afterwards? The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -

Hi Everybody! You have another newbie!
I've been lurking on this thread for a few weeks and you all seem a great bunch! I've never been much of a runner, and I'm trying to improve my attitude towards it. I do loads of sport, and I'm at the gym, so I'm always busy and active. I'm working with my personal trainer on improving my fitness for running.
So really, I'm a beginner and I'm just looking for a little guidance here and there - it's always good for someone to point out where you may be going wrong!0 -
Hey poorbabe...do you want to do a run together sometime...
You sound very close to me!0 -
