WOW thats a lot of exercise...is it shifting the weight yet? :o

Glad to see you're getting good 10K times there too - you'll be faster than me soon! It amazing how quickly those times are coming down...

    Becky_rtw

'Faster Than You'? - Not if you follow that training plan properly! :p

And to answer your other (cheeky) question about a stone of weight has gone and I am now pretty much what I'd call 'normal build'. However, racing weight is a good bit lower than 'normal build' so weight will continue to drop off....

And, yes times come down faster when more rest/walking is included giving the body time to recover.

  • Well here goes, been lurking on DFW for at least a year - never really got round to posting anything!! Just happy to read and be inspired!. Right, there are probably many threads I could post to - but I will start with this one, decided just over 2 weeks ago that I could really do to tone up and be fitter. Must be reasonably fit already - walk dog everyday, horseride etc. But I am sure those slightly older posters realise that the perfect body shape is certainly harder to maintain without effort!!
Bit the bullet and 2 Mondays ago decided to incorporate some running into my early morning doggy walk (early so noone can see me!!). working my way round a huge field of lovely springy turf (is that cheating?) total distance 1.5miles. I RAN the whole way round the field this morning - just short of a mile - didn't start to struggle until at least halfway - WOW what a feeling! I think I must have started off at the right pace a fortnight ago and I am determined not to push it too soon - no real aches and pains and I can't believe that I managed to run all that way in such a sort space of time - I could hardly manage 10 strides when I first started!

I am inspired and now hooked on reading all about you fab runners!!!

Oi - are you trying to say I talk gibberish?

Ok then guilty as charged! :o

Springy grass - sounds good to me. If only there was a 'springy grass marathon' - now there's an idea!

It sounds as though you have the running bug already, just wait until you really get going. But, as you say, you seem to be in generally good nick so should be able to cautiously get some running done. The lack of stiffness and aching is simply an indication that you are not stretching ligaments and tendons much further than they are already used to.

To build up try running every 3 days (see my diary above) as this fits in with the body's own recovery cycle. Do all your other stuff, particularly walking, in between and you'll soon progress.

You do need the right breed of dog though! I had a labrador who gave up after half a mile and went skulking back home whereas when I had a dalmation he was quite happy to do 20 milers and then go and 'play out'.

  • Hi notapenny! welcome to the mad house. Don't worry about getting down with the lingo, i haven't, and really it's only Richoneday (Aka Magnus Pyke) our resident boffin who comes out with big words like mitochondria, sorbothane, and anaerobic!! the rest of us use real words, like jiggly and asthma!!

i have 2 springers who never want to go in the same direction as me on a walk!! i wouldn't dream of taking them out running with me!! bad enough with a 7 year old on her bike, that's distraction enough!!

Re what becks said, please don't expect me to give out advice, as flattered as i am, i'm no athlete!!
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

Well, my dog would think I'd gone mad if I started running or even walking any distance. She certainly wouldnt join in. She'd sit at home, keeping the sofa warm for when I got back

    My DD might join in.

Maybe we need to go trainer shopping. Any recommendations
Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches

  • What not streching muscles/ligaments enough Ha Ha (high pitched wail - I'm scared of pain!!)

I am running Mon-Fri with Sat/Sun off (still walking 'doing' ponies etc). Looking at the training plan that is probably not the right thing to be doing - but it does seem to be suiting at the mo................

I think that as (hopefully) distances improve I should then cut down to 3 days? Once the light goes completely I will have to wean myself of said springy turf and hit the roads!!

I have a labrador - she is one of these working 'full of life' types and is enjoying our short runs although, poor thing sniff time is restricted! She does take herself back to bed as soon as we get back though!!!
  • Hi all

Just catching up on the weekend's activities. Well I did the 5K with possibly the worst hangover I have ever had!! Had to get OH to drive to the race as there was no way I was capable of driving, had to stop to be sick on the way too - lol!!

Anyhow, serves me right. I even fell down the stairs on Sat night so had a cracking bruise on my knee and chin, great start...

Well got round the 5K in 25:32 which I'm happy with. Would be great to crack 25min but lets face it I didn't give myself the best chance did I??!

Have entered another 5K for December 7th, may try and stay off the booze for that one.

On the positive side, I can completely recommend running as a hangover cure...
