Hi there, whilst we are on the big calves discussion, I have big calves. I think it is genetic, my mum has big calves too. Anyway, when I buy 3/4 leggings for running, I have to get them with zips on, or else they cut off the circulation to my feet. Either that or I just stretch the bottoms until the stitches give then they are ok. Someone should tell these manufacturers that just because we are runners we don't have skinny legs!

You love it when I spread rumours - it improves your naughty reputation:cool:

Everywhere really, but mostly on the front mid calf and on the back same place...it only seems to be one or two at a time though...maybe its all those annoying tourists I always end up banging into :rotfl:

    Hmmmm, well maybe! :p

Now, whilst all the other posters partake in frivolity, these bruises do have a cause.

It is likely to be a bone weakness but nothing to worry about if it hasn't caused you a problem so far because the whole musculoskeletal system will strengthen up as you run more.

I've got a bone weakness in the calves from an attempt to become the worst 3000m hurdler in history. Yes I hit the first hurdle with both legs, felt incredible pain and all I could hear was the guy on the loudspeaker laughing. I ask you - I was in distress!

However, everything seems to sort itself out and compensate for the weakness so causes no problem. If your bruises get worse though I'd get the legs X-rayed to see if there's an obvious cause.

You see - I can be serious!

  • Becky,

Have a look at this thread, I think they're discussing something similar:

There's no particular answer given, although there is a suggestion of anaemia as a cause. I would say that is highly unlikely, anaemia makes you feel weak and gives a yellowy colour to the skin. You are far from weak so I don't think it more than a tiny possibility - but a simple blood test can eliminate it very quickly.

In any case, bruising is broken blood capillaries and usually caused by trauma or weakness so its worth getting some advice on the subject.

I wouldn't worry unduly but think it best worth checking out.

To be fair a cause of clumsiness is probably the easiest to cure (Just making a note to not let Becky carry any drinks trays at future meets!).

But delicate? Doesn't really go with the tuff go-getter image you've created! :p
