Hi there can I join in too? Have recently started running (when I say running what i mean is fast walking/slow jogging! :D ) with the intention of running in events later on in the year.
As a newcomer to this I understand I need to build up gradually - however, when out last night I developed pains in my shins (shin splits  ). I am going to try more stretching exercises than I have been doing and will also check my trainers - does anyone have any more tips on how to prevent this? Would it be easier if i was to run on grass for example?

    Any advice much appreciated.

I had sore shins too when i started 6 weeks ago. I could hardly walk the next day! It does get better and I found it easier on my legs to run on grass - but harder work!

More or less gone, thanks... so I should get out for a jog over the weekend, then back in the gym next week :j Have managed to walk to and from work every day up till this morning (decided to have a rest today!), and a bit of wandering around at lunchtime, reckon I've covered about 25 miles on foot this week  Talking of thighs, with my training for the Race For Life, I seem to be at the stage where muscles have tightened up but not gone too bulky, my thighs have definitely lost the little wobbly bits they had :o

Happy running everyone (or whatever else you get up to at the weekend  ) x
