So I guess you need a lot of entrants all starting at the same time. You start from the back and carve your way through. How many people run the GNR?
I don't know if you can do it over a 5k, there would physically be too many bodies to get past in that time and by the time the last starters cross the line, the front of the field is too far ahead. It would have to be 10k at the least I'd say.
At the end of the day this is a 'novelty' record, so nobody really puts much thought in to it.
The current record is just over 21,000, but someone is unofficially claiming 28,000 although that will never get ratified.
Through my own stupidity, ie completely messing up travel arrangements, in the GNR in 94 I had a practise run at this with one other guy who found himself in the same predicament.
We started 16 mins after the official start time and absolutely blitzed the first 2 miles knowing we were going to hit a wall of runners and come to a standstill, 9-35 to 2 miles (that gets your endorphins going I can tell you). But then it was just a solid mass of smelly humankind with apparently no gaps.
We got through eventually and I was absolutely buzzing at the end to get given a time of 1-34, which equated to 1-18 through all that sweating flesh. Ugh!
I never even thought about the overtaking thingy, but 3 years later heard what the record was and did a quick check. The number overtaken was 33,576.
So it can be done. The good news now is that there are 50,000 in the race instead of 35,000 then. (More to overtake)
The bad news now is that there is 50,000 in the race instead of 35,000 then (How the hell do you overatke them?)Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I see your problem! I do think you'll be able to pass more people in a bigger field though, I don't think it will be much denser with runners, just much more stretched out!Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0

I'm inclined to agree, because you really couldn't get much denser than what we experienced that day.
Oh Maz - I've just checked and I'm still BMI 30.6, which is officially obese. And I'm still a veteran, although starting to feel a little younger but that doesn't count.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

WEll guys, i went out tonight for a run with runchum tonight.....! yay me!!!!
We did 2 miles, with no stops which is good for us, given we're running once a week just now...
Swimming lesson tomorrow night! hoping it goes as well as last week....!!!!
Catch y'all tomorrow for more fun n shenanigans!!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

The BMI quote was because you seemed to be implying earlier that I was telling porkies and was really a lean mean running machine already. :rotfl:Trust me I'll let you know when I go down through that 30.0 barrier!
Well done on tonight's effort, it's all good. Doesn't it get dark early though for early Sept? Or do I say that every year at this time?
No bruises is the aim for this week's swimming lesson! I know its a tough challenge but see if you can manage it.

Oh Maz, you do come out with some brilliant comments at times, a great match for Rich, for certain! :rotfl:BTW, whoever's Magnus Pike??? Yes, just joking! Considering the looks I get my running shoe buying process must be weird. (but at least this is a post relating to money saving - MSE Martin will be pleased )
So this is it:
1. Go to largest sportsshoes retailer in the world (their description). (But why is it always empty?)
2. Go directly to 'Sales' section. (No passing Go and all that guff)
3. Quick scan of boxes eliminating anything with price tag over £30.
4. Select cheapest pair that comes in size 10. (Hopefully £10-£15)
5. Try on.
6. If comfy (which they always are), buy.
7. While sales assistant is ringing purchase through (and suggesting I might like a gait analysis, supinate, pronate blah bla blah) take shoes out of box and whip out insoles (I hate those that are glued in). Ask if bin handy and throw away insoles.
8. Put Sorbothane in.
9. Away I go. All done in as little as 2minutes (5 max).
Because the place is usually empty theres generally 4 young kids looking at me as though I'm a clueless imbecile ( I am, but thats not the point).
Its not as though shoes have an endorphin rating - I might take a bit longer if that was the case.
I've never had sore knees, ankle problems, hip problems etc so since I've done this at least twice a year for 25 years since I was 17 there can't be that much wrong with it.
So, what exactly is so weird about what I do? (Don't worry you won't hurt my feelings)

Morning guys!
Wow your shoe buying process sounds quick - I just buy the ones in the nicest colour! God there's a market for nice looking trainers that just isn't fufilled at the moment.
No offense Rich but BMI 30! Are you made of muscle or something!?!
Speaking of knees...I'm still having trouble with mine (both now) - managed the usual 3 miles this morning but not sure if I'll be able to go out again tonight... what do others do to look after theirs?0
