Maz is obviously a proper woman and just too well mannered to admit it...
Ahh that would explain a lot! I didn't think the site was that hard to use...
Yes it is especially when you do it twice a day, its not that bad the knee, but I play footie as well as run so I have to be careful I don't damage it. Determined to do the run tomorrow though - about 8 runners passed me on the way back and I always thought I was quite quick!
Its amazing how competitive this running home from work can get! There's just something that you can't control - if there's something to race against you want to race. :jGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Was supposed to get up and run this morning but it was dark...When did that happen! And it was blowing a hoolie and pouring with rain (also been up 4 times with DD in the night, I know excuses excuses!)
So going to try and get out tonight but depends what time DH gets back from work
Thanks for all your encouragement, Sounds like everyone is getting really into it. Donna will be thinking of you in your half a week on sunday, I still haven't had any info about the dam thing yet which is a bit strange!
Oh well will update later, and Maz im with you...large drink of water and a nice shower!
Sally, if you read through Beinerts' post NO 2320 it may just make you want to run like the clappers, just make sure DH is on duty (at home) for you afterwards!!!! :rotfl:Now if that's not an incentive I'm not sure what is!!!:D
I'm gonna run and run and run tomorrow and see what my endorphins do, though to be honest beinerts the exercise bike can also have a very similar effect!!! I thought that was just me, but hubby says no...... so we now fight like mad to get control of the bike!!!! :rotfl::rotfl:
Good job it's after the 9 pm watershed time! Back to what I did today....
another 5 miles and thrilled to bits at it. Very windy, but I was determined to do it.
Glad to hear you're much better Maz, though sorry to hear about the rest of the family. Well I am back on track, 2 days of healthy eating (feel so much better) and I got up and ran 4 miles this morning:p although it was dark...don't know what I shall do in the winter as Im not too keen on running in the dark on my own.I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Since beinerts brought the subject up, but was a bit hasty in wanting to drop such a fascinating subject, a little more study maybe warranted. It's amazing just how much control these fiendish little chemicals have over us. Here are a few snippets about them:
Endorphins are endogeneous opioid polypeptide compounds. They are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalmus in vertebrates during strenuous exercise, excitement and orgasm.
As a morphine derivative, endorphins are highly addictive and genuine withdrawal symptons are experienced by subjects receiving less than their regular 'dosage'.
A widely publicized effect of endorphin production is the so-called "runner's high", which is said to occur when strenuous exercise takes a person over a threshold that activates endorphin production. Endorphins are released during long, continuous workouts, when the level of intensity is between moderate and high, and breathing is difficult.
This also corresponds with the time that muscles use up their stored glycogen. (Late in a marathon!!). Workouts that are most likely to produce endorphins include running, swimming, cross-country skiing, long distance rowing, bicycling, and weight lifting.
According to research, alcohol consumption is directly related to endorphin levels. Low endorphin levels make subjects more vulnerable to alcohol. This can either be a genetically low level of endorphins or a drop from a previously higher level of endorphin production such as a regular exerciser becoming more sedate.
So, this raises one or two questions:
1. Are Maz and Sally immune to the effects of endorphins or, as Becky suggests, are they just too ladylike and polite to admit to such things?
2. Is it fair on the local females of his area to allow beinerts to do runs of 10k+?
3. Does the fact that Sue gets double helpings, Running and Cycling, mean she has one of the happiest husbands in the UK?
4. Are we all doomed to become alcoholics? From my own experience the answer to this is no. There is definitely a trade off between alcohol and exercise though, in that when sedentary you attempt to, unsuccessfully, replace the runner's high. Certainly at very high levels of running you are completely indifferent to alcohol.
Any interesting endorphin experience tales to tell? Purely in the name of research, of course...Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Thanks or all the info Rich.
RE: question 2. Don't worry, it's just my fiancee that has to deal with it and she'll tell me to stop bothering her if I'm too much of a pest.
It's interesting about the alcohol as well, alcohol is a depressant so substituting running with booze wouldn't be very successful in recreating the "high" IMO.
Someone should have warned me about this endorphin high, I didn't realise I risked becoming a junkie by taking up running!Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
beinerts,
You're right, alcohol can't recreate the runner's high - but it doesn't stop you trying, and trying and then trying some more.
I think an understanding of endorphins should be compulsory before taking up running!!
At the end of the day, if we encourage others to take up running we're nothing more than drug-pushers. :eek:Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Actually Rich,
A friend encouraged me to take it up on that basis - hmm that doesnt say a lot about me does it? I just wasnt quite getting that 'high' from footie so he suggested running!0 -
I play footie too (playing tonight). I suppose as it's stop and go you don't really have that prolonged heavy breathing that pushes you into endorphin production. Mind you, I only play 5-a-side for 45 minutes.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0

Well, it's free and legal so good on ya.
The only slight problem is that you're already enjoying the 'benefits' despite having barely reached the 'endorphin production threshold' which is supposed to be roughly a good, hard 10k.
What are you going to be like if you do a half marathon or marathon?
