Rich, speaking of finishing places, according to the Nike website I finished around 20,000th out of 1 million. I find that highly improbable as that would put me in the top 2% and I don't think that can be right. I'd expect a much higher percentage to be beating my time?

    Its impressive isn't it?

The thing about mass races though is that the pointy end of the race is well, er, very, very, very pointy. And the bigger the race the more pointy it gets.

As an example I once finished inside the top 1% of The London Marathon (pos 298) (which sounds good) but I was a full 7 miles behind the winner (which doesn't sound so good) - that's how pointy they can become.

You've actually hit on the reason why my record attempt may not be as unachievable as it first looks.

I think you will find you were in the top 2% with 48 mins. You can probably count on 50%+ being non-trained and another 30%+ only having put in a token effort in the last couple of weeks. You, on the other hand, are a proper runner.

Rich and Maz, sitting in a tree...;)

    Only joking of course.

Certainly have to say that Rich is a welcome addition to the thread, especially as he called me a "proper runner"!

Rich, RE your record attempt it does sound more achievable, especially as I've technically "beaten" 980,000 runners after training under half a year :rotfl:

It would seem the trick is to find a long event (marathon) with the highest possible number of entrants. Knowing you can overtake well over 90% of the other runners must give you confidence. What is the record currently at?

He certainly has brightened things up a lot!!! craaaazy man!!!

.......sitting in a tree indeed! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think that's one of the fab things about the thread, there are people like me who will never be proper runners but do try, people like you, Sal and Becks who have mega potential and are already proper runners.... and proper runners like Cnoelj, JB and (allegedly obese!) veterens like Rich... who would whip the asses of anyone of us!!!

    It's a lovely place!

    Hmmm!!

Don't know how to take that.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. lol

The thing is when I was training properly I was being advised by the guy who was training Tim Hutchings, who you may or may not have heard of but he was good!, and you have no choice but to learn all the ins and outs and the theory.

If only!! lol You do have to actually overtake them!

The target is deliberately set at a level which you couldn't do in a marathon (well, unless you start at the back and win the London - good luck if you feel up to it).

Thanks for all the lovely help though!
  • Ooooooooo, just received an email from Guinness with a couple of attachments - one is called 'World Record Agreement'.

So I guess you need a lot of entrants all starting at the same time. You start from the back and carve your way through. How many people run the GNR?

I don't know if you can do it over a 5k, there would physically be too many bodies to get past in that time and by the time the last starters cross the line, the front of the field is too far ahead. It would have to be 10k at the least I'd say.
