Congratulations Beinerts!!!:T That was all achieved in a brilliant time, very well done indeed!

So happy to see you're feeling much better today Maz, one thing about a bug is that you almost always lose weight. Having said that .....you can keep it!! :D Well, not literally, Heaven forbid.

Thanks for your motivation talk Rich, it's absolutely right and this thread is doing wonders for me already. Though rivalry?? You did 6 miles today you say, then I'm doing 7 tomorrow!!:D Actually I didn't go walking today as the wind was awful here but I cycled indoors, then did wii fit for the first time so a PB for me there!:p

Happy runs for all.... though NOT for Maz!!:D;)

Happy runs! lol @ SueUU! you are terrible!!!

The "runs" are gone now, although i seem to have shared with the rest of household, oh joy!

Took dogs for a walk last night, probably only a couple of miles, but it was enough for me, as yesterday i didn't eat much, and had nothing the day before... however as i feel fine now i shall be back up to speed pretty soon food wise!!

That said, i did go weigh myself and have lost about half a stone in the last 2 weeks, not entirely due to the bug as it was coming off anyway, but i think it has helped a lot! lol!

Run planned for tomorrow after work.... all being well!

48 mins is nothing to be ashamed of at all, in fact it's brill!!!

Thanks! I'm not ashamed at all - quite the opposite - it's just that I'd do it a bit differently next time.

Hey beinerts, i wasn't suggesting it was anything to be ashamed of at all, just a figure of speech, abeit not the right one maybe, sorry!

Well done again, you did great!

    My Nike 10k race report.

Bearing in mind, I decided to do this on August 3rd. I trained on and off (working shifts does not go well with a decent running plan)

First 2.5km was done at an average of 5.23mins per km, I was a x-country runner as a kid and I know the value of taking it at your own pace (I did pass Paula Radcliffe at one point! :p)

Second 2.5km was done at an average of 5.02mins per km and I felt good, but disaster struck! My kidneys decided that 5km was more than enough and joined up with a stitch to attack me!

Third 2.5km was done in 6.05mins per km and the final 2.5km dropped off considerably to 6.35mins per km.

Final time was 58'41, which put me in 6,015 position in London.

The things I will do for next year's race will be: Train for longer, actually run the distance (:p) and go past that!

    Hi All,

I'm new to running - started about 2 and a half months ago and I have a question for the more experienced runners.
I'm fine with short distances, currently I do 3 miles twice a day four days a week, and I do at least one 5-6 miles on the weekend...how can I build in some longers runs? I'm totally dead after 6 miles at the moment...am I just pushing too hard too soon? It feels like at the moment I'll never go much further (boo).

    Thanks for any help,

I would go with just trying to go 100m further every week you run. That way, you go 100m further by the end of the week on the 3 miles front and then 100m further on the weekend. When you look back over the month, you've nearly done another half mile or so

  • I don't think beinerts took it the wrong way Maz - he's in too good a mood to take a comment the 'wrong way'!

Nice to know you're better - but don't get any ideas about looking around for another bug to catch to lose another half stone!!!

Well, I've been in touch with Guiness World Records and registered the record attempt. Gulp!!! They are getting back to me with the actual current record and rules and stuff.

The record? : 'The most runners overtaken by an individual in a single IAAF affiliiated athletics event'

My interest in this was piqued at the weekend when I saw a report that 2 Kenyan runners were claiming the record after overtaking 9,150 runners in the Berlin Marathon. They're miles off but that's not the point.

The official world record the last time I knew was just over 21,000 and was/is held by Brendan Foster. I'm hoping this has been surpassed because the attempt will need the cooperation of the Great North Run organisers, ie Brendan Foster!!!

So the attempt will be to achieve a mark of 30,000+ and, ideally, close to 35,000.

But why? Well, I always used to get The Guinness Book Of Records for Christmas as a little boy and always thought it would be kinda cool to get an entry in it. Since I'm useless at pancake tossing, can't eat a bicycle and the chinese seem to have the domino toppling records sewn up I may as well stick to this.

But the main point is that just by having a decent crack at this I can't help but get fit and should go from 14st 12lbs to around 11st during the process and then get stuck in to proper targets again. Yippee.

On my 6 mile run/walk (just about 50/50) this morning I overtook 2 walkers and a man walking his dog so that's 3 (or 4 I suppose, if you count the dog!).

    Only 34,996 to go......................................

Hi Becky, welcome aboard. You do realise once you've started running you can never escape? It's a life sentence lol.

To answer your question, there's a basic principle involved to coax more distance out of your body/legs.

Roughly speaking your 'collapse point' is 3x your daily average. So, for instance if you were averaging 4 miles per day your 'collapse point' would be around 12 miles. This is similar to the 'The Wall' in a marathon but not quite as severe.

To get longer runs done the first step is to try doing back to back 4 milers on consecutive days and then 3 consecutive days. By doing this you will find going further than you've ever done before quite easy. It's all about getting your body to prepare itself for what you're planning on doing.

    Hope that makes sense?

    But good luck.
