Good Heavens Rich, is that really true? I keep watching this thread in envy of everyone who can jog, but I've tried it and just can't, well not successfully. The main reason I wanted to get jogging was the obvious one of losing weight (burning calories) but with my walking I've always felt I'm just not getting enough, but if what you say above really is right, then I'm increasing my walking!
Thanks Rich.
Well done with that swimming Maz! You really sounded thrilled to bits with your achievements and rightly so. It doesn't matter if you legs were a bit haywire as you have to get it right bit by bit and you can't concentrate on so much so quickly. It'll all come right in time. For now, enjoy yourself!

Well, you're struggling with motivation so you need some positive geeing-up.
But remember, so do I.
And you can hardly give me a good !!!!! kicking for being lazy and demotivated if you're not performing, now can you? That would make you a hypocrite and you don't want to be one of those.
So, you see the logic? If I don't keep you motivated, I lose my motivator. See? :beer:Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi Sue,
Yes, it is perfectly true but most people can't quite get their heads round the idea.
Running at steady-state comfortable pace c. 100 calories per mile.
Walking at medium pace c.100 calories per mile.
Where people get confused is with the 'rate' of calorie burn. While running you are burning calories much quicker, so calories per min is 2.5 times higher for running, but calories per mile are pretty much the same.
Which is a little known secret. If you get home from work and you really aren't up to getting changed and getting motivated to run, just go for a walk. No need to get changed even.
Because 2 miles of walking is far better than nothing that would happen otherwise!
Does that make sense? Or is waffle?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Right, that's it, after reading all this I'm going for a run in the morning. I seem to have lost my mojo lately...LBM 16/06/08 - Credit card debts June '08 [STRIKE]£49,145 [/STRIKE].... Feb '13 balance £38,478 ... We'll get there0

It makes perfect sense Rich and I'm really grateful to you for pointing it out as you have done. I'm going for a much longer walk tomorrow and really looking forward to it. I always walk very briskly - and when no ones around - swing the arms hard to increase the heart rate.
Thanks for all the above Rich, just can't wait to get out there!

It did indeed Maz and I'll bet you had a smile on your face for the rest of the dayand why not. You've given me a shove too, just a little more weight to go and I'll be far more confident about getting into the pool again!
Thanks Maz - and thanks to you both for the push tonight, I'm really grateful. Have a great day tomorrow (today).

Oh good, I made sense!
That other little gem also comes in to play as well 'Little But Often'
Roughly speaking 2 miles per day medium walking = 20 lbs weight loss over the course of a year.
Which isn't a great effort for the result really, but most give up if they're not size 0 after 2 weeks!!!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

In which case, in excess of 3 per day should definately secure that magic 20 lb. If I could lose that, I'd be back to a size 16 , but 0 will never be me!
Thank goodness!
This is sounding better and better. Thanks again Rich, I'm so thrilled with all the advice.

Just so you know where that comes from:
1lb weight = 3500 calories
365 days x 2 miles = 730 miles
730 miles @ 100 calories = 73,000 calories = 21 lbs.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
